so there you have it….get those masks on ASAP
B”H
Please paraphrase what the Rav said about the virus. It’s hard to follow it on my phone.
Here is a summary for those who can’t listen to 60 minutes. Rabbi Braun kindly, brilliantly and eloquently spoke in strong terms about following medical guidance when it comes to the current pandemic. He quoted countless Torah and Halachic sources emphasizing how we must take care of health, not do risky things, listen to doctors, take responsibility for one another and the importance of saving EVEN ONE LIFE. He refuted many of the current opinions of “COVID IS OVER, I WON’T WEAR A MASK ANYMORE”. And he humbly stated that he’s not a doctor or expert in medical matters but… Read more »
He spoke about how Dr. Weiss reported that the REbbe told him that during the Spanish flu, the Rebbe’s father, R’ Levik did not send him to Cheder, but taught him at home.
Interesting. The Rebbe was 16-17 years old at the time of the Spanish flu . Maybe that’s a reason the Rebbe was taught at home and not sent to Yeshivah.
that perhaps the rebbe did not go to tomchei timimmim becuase of the flu!
The Rav makes the point that, as I understood it, wearing a mask is like wearing a seat belt. We take precautions around danger that the doctors tell us we should do. However, this past Shabbos we weren’t just told to wear masks again (and I don’t think that a mask is a small inconvenience for some, unlike seatbelts), which allows everyone to go to shul. As an analogy, you can drive the car, even though you could get into a car accident, just wear a seatbelt. We were told to not ride in the car at all and not… Read more »
It’s called “KILLING another person”, not “Mesiras Nefesh”.
He said that as long as it’s a matter of pikuach nefesh, even one life, that mandates all the precautions even at the expense of your “frumkeit” and your inconvenience.
Once there is no Pikuach Nefesh concern, then the precautions may be dropped.
Now what important point was not covered?
“At what point do we say that Torah, Davening, Farbrengens, is something worth having “Mesiras Nefesh” for?” Answer: Never. When it comes to abortion (what you would call “Mesiras Nefesh of the baby” and I would call “killing a baby”) at what point is abortion justified? Answer: Never. Even if there is a tremendous amount at stake: an entire family’s parnassa, no money for tuition to learn Torah, the father not being able to Daven with a Minyan, Shalom bayis, the baby is diagnosed with terrible disabilities that will ruin the quality of the baby’s life and the life of… Read more »
To use your baby analogy, at what point does a woman have Mesiras Nefesh to risk having a child and at what point is it too dangerous and she can’t have children? Every pregnancy carried to term is pikuach nefesh (as mentioned in the above shiur regarding Shabbos). 100% of the time. Maybe women should never get pregnant ever? Would we not care about the effect on the next generation of such a policy? The answer is obviously that it is a balance of risk vs. necessity and life priorities. So who is balancing here? What is the cheshbon? I’m… Read more »
