On December 4, Chabad of Carnegie Mellon University brought the Jewish community together to light a nine-foot menorah in the center of campus. The event was a tremendous success with close to 200 people in attendance.
CMU Dean of Student Affairs, Gina Caselango, lit the shammosh, followed with blessings by Nathan Oshlag, Chabad and AEPi student president. A number of other CMU faculty members as well as the Scotty Dog Mascot lit the rest of the torches.
The highlight of the evening in Pittsburgh, PA, was the novelty of the live Chanukah music played by the CMU Bagpipe Band along with hot apple cider and latkes for all who participated in this historic event.
This program, coordinated by Chabad of Carnegie Mellon University, was co-sponsored by AEPi, Hillel JUC, Jewish Graduate Student Association and Jewish Student Association. Chabad arranged for the nine-foot menorah to be stationed in the center of CMU’s campus during the eight-day holiday, to spread the light of Chanukah to the entire campus community.
“There was a real feeling of community at the event,” said Rabbi Shlomo Silverman, director of Chabad of CMU. “This year’s addition of the Scotty Dog lighting the menorah together with The Bagpipe Band playing Chanukah music, really brought the CMU school spirit to the event.”
In addition to this festive menorah lighting on the last night of Chanukah, Chabad provided many other Chanukah programs for CMU students including smaller menorah lightings, a falafel dinner, and more.
