lets look at this from a completely different point. myself and 2 other schluchim nearby make a yearly Shabaton in a first class hotel, this past year we had a total (exact number) 213 this included 5 chabad couples, 4 bocrim who helped with davining and Kriyas Hatorah, 3 girls who took care of the kids program, 2 guest speakers one who came with his wife. in this case we have about 15-20 chabad couples (at least. just look at the pictures) a list of about 30 speakers, and then a lot of other people hanging on etc etc. and… Read more »

Shluchim!
August 12, 2009 8:08 pm

The shluchim out there are suffering miserably in this relentless economic downturn. The $ spent on this lovely program should have been distributed to them, so they have food to eat, and could pay their rent. Instead, seniors and rabbis are vacationing in Greeenwich and learning Torah to boot. Our priorities are askew. Further good ides: Take the 2 million dollars rabbi Kotlarsky raises for the kinus, and distribute it, this year, to the shluchim, and skip the kinus this year. Oh yes, of course, the Rebbe instituted the kinus. But then again,he also distributed big $ to the shluchim. And,… Read more »

Numbers...
August 12, 2009 1:17 pm

The retreat has different options. five days, three days etc. so all together they have 500+ booked – the biggest ever.
When ppl say too much money is being spent, they dont really talk for everyone. At theend of the day, if you put ona cheap event, everyone will know it and they will say, why did we spend so much and get garbage. Better give mit hent un fis and ppl walk away hapy and you give them bioth quality begashmiyus and of course the ikar b’ruchniyus.

I was actually at the retreat today and i was in a meeting with hotel staff… Tomorrow nights dinner will have seating for 440 and Friday night for 520… Both numbers are far more than any retreat in the past.

comments from a bal habos
August 12, 2009 7:11 am

I have a bal habos that is there. he said that the speeches are all very good. The food is great and he loves being around so many jews. He sees that it was heavily subsudised and he is wondering if there werent better things to do with chabad’s money knowing that there are starving shluchim. I explained to him that these things have to be nice but he said that the people who are there would have been just as happy in a rustic setting without all the fancy food and service. I think that they try to capture… Read more »
