So many of us have heard the word “trauma” lately.
But what does it actually mean? Who’s impacted by it? How can we help those that are impacted by it?
It was these questions and many more that led to the creation and launch of Fresh Start; a first-of-its-kind center focused on understanding and healing from trauma, specifically built for the frum community.
Fresh Start was founded in late 2020 by four Detroit natives, Dr. Moshe Robins, Clinical Director, Yochanan Polter, Executive Director, Tova Korn, Director of Operations, and Tzadok Eliyahu, COO.
Fresh Start has since brought on some of the biggest names in trauma research and recovery in both the secular and frum world to advise and guide those who are providing treatment and programming at the Center.
These include Dr. Janina Fisher, Dr. Jacob Ham, Dr. Ken Adams, Dr. Stuart Ablon, Dr. Reggie Melrose, Dr. Akiva Perlman, Rabbi Shimon Russel, Rabbi Shais Taub, Rabbi Moshe Weinberger and others.
“We are focused on helping members of the Jewish community understand the connections between the past and the present, including unresolved childhood issues, neglect, trauma, and abuse; and create a life of meaning,” their website says.
Fresh Start began a few months ago by launching its innovative 5-day intensive retreat. Built on a proven workshop model, but custom-tailored for the frum community, the Fresh Start Retreat allows its participants, limited to 5 at a time, to truly explore, understand, and process unresolved issues and their long-term effects and impact on their lives.
Located on a beautiful Michigan Island outside of Detroit, the magnificent one-acre property boasts 5 beautiful private bedrooms, along with an Art Room, Yoga Room, Brain Spa, Gym, Lounge, and an outdoor oasis located just feet from the Detroit River.
Participants are also treated to therapeutic after-hours activities like Tai Chi, Yoga, Somatic, Art, and Music therapy as well as Kosher and nutritious meals catered by Soul Cafe/Epic Kosher Catering with dinner being prepared onsite by their chef (Under the hechsher of the Vaad Harabonim of Detroit).

I’m sure this will help many of our own to deal with significant tramua. It seems to have been created in a very balanced way, enrolling top Rabbi’s, Dr’s and proffesionals. Very reassuring for a frum Jew who may be concerned that it is not in line with Yiddishkeit. Great work!!!
Absolutely amazing! We need this!
This is such a beautiful initiative and certainly so many will benefit so many struggling on their journey!
