While family and friends were celebrating his daughter’s wedding in Brooklyn, Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin got a chance to somewhat rejoice as well.
Incarcerated in the Federal Correctional Institution in Otisville for bank fraud, Rubashkin was denied release for the occasion this past Thursday.
Instead, he listened to the proceedings of the chuppah over the phone and as broadcast on COLlive.com, he offered his blessings to the young couple.
The simcha continued behind bars on Sunday when Mordechai Werdyger came to the facility for a visit that was planned months in advance to cheer up Jewish inmates.
Werdyger, the Jewish music superstar known as Mordechai Ben David, or simply MBD, was accompanied by 5 members of the Shira Choir, an all men singing group.
“We spoke and sang a lot, and even danced a little,” choir leader Shraga Feivel Gold told haredi Hebrew website JDN.co.il.
About Rubashkin, Gold said: “You can see the emunah and bitachon by him, it’s unbelievable.”
Gold said Rubashkin told them that he had begun arrangements weeks in advance to be able to phone from the prison at the time of the chuppah.
On Thursday night, when Rubashkin was about to place the call, he forgot the code each prisoner gets to make outgoing calls.
“He told us that during those moments he was in great pain,” Gold said. “Not to be at the chuppah of his daughter, and not even to hear her through the phone… He returned to his room, and 10 minutes later he did remember the code.”
And it turned out to be a hashgacha protis.
“The chuppah was delayed a little and he said that if he would have called earlier, he wouldn’t have been able to hear the whole Chuppah, as his time on the phone is limited.”
The public is asked to continue prayer for Sholom Mordechai ben Rivkah.
