The girls at Lubavitch Sparks High School in Crown Heights are entering their second term this week, and they’re excited. A pre-Pesach Shabbaton has just been announced. To join, each girl will have to reach academic and personal goals specifically tailored for them. In the days ahead Sparks staff will be meeting with each girl to discuss areas seen as challenges, areas of improvement and areas where each girl is capable of pushing further. This individualized achievement plan lies at the heart of Sparks’ educational model: The road to achievement is different for each girl.
Sparks High School provides an enriching learning environment that helps our students learn, develop and grow. Our unparalleled curriculum and teaching methods help students take the next step in their education and approach the future with confidence.
Originally named Chabad Girls Academy High, the school was born not long after Mrs. Roch Hildeshaim recognized the vital need for a smaller Chassidisher High School for graduating eighth graders in Crown Heights. In June of 2019 she and her sister Mrs. Chaya Margolin opened what is now called Lubavitch Sparks High School.
The school’s mission is to empower each and every girl to fulfill the Rebbe’s charge that we “Ker a Velt Heint!” — Change the world today! Sparks recognizes that every single one of its students has the capabilities to do just that, and the goal is to bring out the uniqueness in each one to help them get there.
Now in the middle of its second year, staff and parents are seeing untold growth in each student. They see the choices they make, the questions they ask and the direction they want to lead their life. The girls feel it themselves.
Lubavitch Sparks High School is built around the idea that every individual has been granted a personal role in the mission of refining the world. When a girl enters Sparks High School, she is able to utilize every part of herself to make positive changes in the world around her. Not only do the dedicated staff help her open up and find that spark inside her—whether it is a particular talent, skill, middah or academic pursuit—that makes her unique, they also work with the difficulties that challenge her and help shape them into positive attributes. She can now take these challenges and skills she has and move forward with that responsibility to make a positive change in the world.
This worldview is reinforced throughout the day. Each morning before davening, the girls learn Perek Mem Aleph of Tanya, reminding them each day to recall that the world was created for them—“Bishvili Nivra Haolam”—and there is nothing outside of Hashem—“Ein Od Milvado.”
These two quotes, the Alter Rebbe explains, might appear to be a contradiction. On the contrary: When a person truly understands the idea that “the world was created for me” they become aware of the responsibility that comes with it—at every second, Hashem is hyperfocusing His energy on ME. The responsibility of “the world was created for me” means that Hashem is actually relying on US to do HIS job.
We must therefore use our talents, our maalos and skills to elevate the Divine sparks in order to bring Moshiach. Here at Sparks High School, the girls find many of these talents and skills within them.
Each girl at Sparks High School is surrounded by an atmosphere where she can truly be comfortable to be herself. The small classes cap at 10 students in order that each teacher can individualize her lessons and expectations to fit the needs of each student. The goal is for each student to succeed at her level.
It’s why Sparks’ co-directors Chaya Margolin and Roch Hildeshaim put so much care in hiring teachers. They look for someone who is warm and wants to be in the school for the sake of the students; someone with a love and passion for the subject she teaches and works that the girls come to love the subject as well. These are the teachers who tap into areas where each girl may struggle, keeping the lesson challenging while reaching out to guide each student along. The girls ask difficult questions and the teachers are prepared to answer with zero judgement.
The Rebbe’s vision on education is clear. We strive to follow his directives on education to instill within the girls the Chassidishe mindsets and confidence they need to succeed in and change the world. We have the privilege of teaching bright and curious students who have the ability to make huge changes in the world, girls who will “Ker a Velt Heint!”
We are now opening registration for the 5782 school year. Please email [email protected] to register or ask any questions regarding the school.
