Rebbetzin Bassie Azimov, who loyally helped her husband in creating the Chabad revolution in Paris, passed away Monday, Cheshvan 17, 5772.
She was 67 and suffered from a heart-attack.
The daughter of famed chossid Rabbi Benzion Shemtov OBM, she grew up in a home infused with love and devout commitment to the Rebbe and his teachings.
She was the youngest sibling of Rabbi Mendel Shemtov OBM of Crown Heights; Rabbi Berel Shemtov, Head Shliach of Michigan; Mrs. Fradel Sudak, wife of Head Shliach to Britain; Rabbi Avraham Shemtov, Head Shliach of Philadelphia; and Rabbi Israel Shemtov of Crown Heights.
Together with her husband, Rabbi Shmuel Azimov, she spearheaded the known “French Lubavitch revolution,” bringing thousands of Jews closer to their heritage and establishing over 70 Chabad Houses and institutions.
She is survived by her husband, their children, Rabbi Mendel Azimov, Mrs. Esther Marasov and Rabbi Levi Azimov – all Shluchim in Paris, and grandchildren.
The levaya will be held today, Monday, from her home in Paris and will pass by the educational complex Beth Chaya Mushka on its way to Israel.
She will be buried in Har Hazeisim in Jerusalem near her father.

Auntie Bassie you were the model of a True Shlucha and Chassisde. You were constantly mikushar to the Rebbe and lived with the Rebbes Sichos and mamarim at every moment. You impacted thousands of your Bal Tshuvos because of your emesdige approach of being open and honest and being the Dugma Chaya and practicing every word you preached.. You also impacted hundreds of your nieces and nephews. You were the one I loved to talk to about all deep concerns you knew the Rebbe’s view on each question. We miss you deeply and we are sure you will use your… Read more »
i just dont understand…
“She was the youngest sibling of Rabbi Mendel Shemtov OBM of Crown Heights; ” i thought she was the daughter of Bentzion Shemtov?
I think that she and her husband changed not only jews in france but all over the world. I and me wife we were one of them who had the ZECHUT to made Teshuva with them and to also get married with them in Paris. It´s a long story and now 34 years later we have children and grandchildren growing in Tora and mistvot. We will miss her a lot.
Baruch Dayan HaEmet… a real Tzadekeis and Dugma Chaya for the whole world in her TZINIUS. WE ALL MISS YOU !!!
“my husband planted and you are reaping”
Thanks to her daughter, I ended up in 10th grade, in Beth Haya Mouchka. She knew my mother from when she was young and that is how my parents were mekouravim (although not chabad). I was a teen and needed someone to put me back on track. She contributed to that…. she will be very missed but is an example of what a shlucha is! today all paris is upside down….
her and her husband are the ones who changed france upside down by bringing thousands of jews closer to yidishkeit
Without taking away from the tremendous work the Azimov’s did and do, I would like to point out that the Rebbe attributed the “revolution’ ONLY to Tomchei Temimim al derech k’belubavitch – Brunoy.
you’ll be missed
As a fellow shlucha, i used to be in awe of Bassie, never thinking we could be friends, she was to me, on a much higher level than i was.
But somehow, one day, we shared an interesting conversation during those early, amazing, kinus hashluchos years….and had a ‘hamshochas halev” and I considered her a friend after that.
it’s hard to believe she’s no longer with us…may bassie be a gutte better for us all.

Bassie was my mesibos shabbos leader many years ago. She was a dugma chaya to all of us. She will be missed.Chaye Freyda Kahan

Boruch Dayan Hoemes.
May Hashem comfort her immidiate family and the entire Paris community. She has many Z”cusim and good deads to follow her up to Shomayim.
She is an example how ONE person can change a country.
As a mechuteneste to the illustrious family, I have seen her in action on numerous times and was in awe of all her accomplishments!!!!
