A series of historical Menorah lightings will take place this Chanukah in the Talbiyeh neighborhood of Jerusalem, organized by Shluchim Eli and Chana Canterman.
A Menorah at the upscale Mamilla Mall will be lit by dignitaries and other famous personalities each night of Chanukah.
They will light a Menorah exactly like the one lit in 770 Eastern Parkway – Lubavitch World Headquarters each Chanukah.
The new Menorah is being crafted especially for the occasion by Crown Heights silversmith R’ Hirsch Pekkar, who created the original one for the Rebbe’s shul years ago.
Pekkar, who designed the original Menorah in 1982 to the Rebbe’s specifications according to the Rambam, flew this week to Jerusalem to put the finishing touches on the replica Menorah.
Pekkar is working overtime to finish the almost 10-foot Menorah, with the help of Israeli silversmith Shmuel Herzog.
“This is the first time a Menorah will be lit in this mall,” Chana Canterman told COLlive. “For the past few years there was an x-mas tree and non-Jewish celebrations here. This is a historic occasion that we are bringing the light of Chanukah here instead.”
The Mamilla Mall, an upscale shopping street in Jerusalem, is located between Jaffa Gate and the David Citadel Hotel. The outdoor promenade and fashionable restaurants attract many tourists to the area.
Each night of Chanukah a different guest will be honored with the lighting of the Menorah, begining with Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger on Tuesday. He will be accompanied by renowned Cantor Naftali Herstik.
The Menorah lightings will take place at 7:00 pm each night of Chanukah, 7:30 pm on Motzei Shabbos. Live music and dancing will take place each night as well.
