A maintenance worker was seen this week doing repair work on the elevator near the Rebbe‘s room in Lubavitch Headquarters – 770 Eastern Parkway.
The job was ordered by Merkos L’inyonei Chinuch which runs the buildings 770-788 together with Agudas Chassidei Chabad.
“New York City released a new code of regulations for elevators,” explained Rabbi Berel Levin, Director of Chabad’s official library adjacent to 770.
He said the elevator has not been in use since 3 Tammuz 5754..
“It is very old and no body uses it. It’s also not build to accommodate the public. So it is kept workable, otherwise money will have to be spent to dismantle it.”
He added that “the Rebbe used the elevator from when it was hard for him the use of the stairs, especially around 5738” – when the Rebbe suffered a heart-attack.
“Until then, the Rebbe would use the stairs,” he noted. “Some times he would use the regular stairs and sometimes the inside stairs that go down from Gan Eden hatachton. There was an order to it.”
Elevators in NYC need to be inspected every year and need to be in working order with all the latest requirements.
Realistic people who don’t understand why the fixing of the Rebbi’s elevator is important to anyone. When Moshiach comes we won’t need an elevator. Also-learn to spell. You look like you are illerate or uneducated, a real chillil hashem.
BUT SO MANY BEAUTIFUL STORIES, COMMENTS AND MEMORIES CAME OUT .THANKS TO HAVE SHARED!!
It is chodesh elul and the elevator is fixed, ready to take us up a flight or two.
See the Rebbe’s sicho from beis nissan edited and published in Likkutei Sichos where he says that the furniture in the room of nesi doreinu are “keylim d’Atzilus.” I’m not sure what category that puts the elevator, but this is certainly no ordinary elevator. Thanks so much for posting this.
MOSHIACH NOW!!!
what kind of people write comments ilke comments #1 and #2?
i like to know what is going on in the Rebbe’s library/home etc!
It is good, so th Rebbe can use it when he comes back
brings back a lot of memories
thank u for sharing it makes me feel moshiach coming closer
…and I remember visiting NY as a child and deciding to take ride up and down in the elevator. I went up to the 2nd or third floor, and in walked the Rashag o”h. He started pinching my cheeks and lightly slapping my face saying something about Yeshiva. I remember the look of horror on my father’s face when he saw me emerge from the elevator with the Rashag behind me. That was the last time I ever went inside that elevator.
WoW! I remember it as if it just inside it. As a child (early 90’s i walked behind the Rebbe to the elevator watched the Rebbe go up and when the elevator returned i would have the Zechus to go upstairs together with the Mazkirus in the very same elevator.
just some memories that will stay with me forever.
Who cares if they fix it or not know ones allowed to use it anyways!
I don’t get it…
