Mordechai Schneerson, a distant relative of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, has recently passed away in the Ukrainian city of Dnepropetrovsk.
He was 96.
His grandfather was R’ Avrohom Schneerson, a brother of Rabbi Baruch Schneur Zalman Schneerson, the Rebbe’s grandfather.
An accomplished architect, Mordechai Schneerson was an active member of the local Jewish community headed by the city’s Chief Rabbi and Chabad Shliach Shmuel Kaminetzky.
His grandchildren, Menachem Mendel and Levi Yitzchak, both study in the Ohr Avner Chabad institutions in the city.
In a rare interview with COL.org.il a few years ago, Schneerson said the Rebbe used to make it a point to call him before Rosh Hashana to wish him a “Shana Tova.”
He also said that during the Communits’ rule, his wife begged him to switch his surname so the authorities don’t do him harm. He said he didn’t give in.
Schneerson said he was a regular in the home of his first-cousin-once-removed Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, Chief Rabbi of the city which was then called Yekaterinoslav.
He later was drafted to the Soviet army fighting for the liberation of Ukraine, Poland, Austria and Germany. He has been wounded a few times and was decorated with medals of honor for his service.
his father’s name was r’levik Schneerson, not to be confused with the rebb’e father. H e was known as levik der kleiner a cousin of r’levik, the rebbe’s father.
The Rebbe’s Paternal Grandfather was called R’ Boruch Shneur (no Zalman).
There are quite a few of the Rebbe’s cousins living all over the globe.
That, for the thinking person, is what is scary.
Have you any idea of how the peasants and the serfs viewed their Tzar?
There are historians who credit this alone (the relationship) for the success of the Communist Revolution. The peasants had such belief and trust that their Tzar had the spiritual ability to see all and to fix everything that it kept them docile while the Bolsheviks rampaged around the country grabbing power.
with Avrohom Schneerson of Kishinev, the father of Rebbetzin Nechoma Dina.
By the way, what was Mordechai Schneerson’s father’s name?
Have you never encountered the concept of “Tzarske Familye”?!
One is never lost. His grandchildren are learning in Ohr Avner. B.H. They may turn out to be great Chasidishe children.
To #2: What is that all about?
If it is the reaction I suspect it is – then that reaction is coming from a scary place.
Thinking people need to think about that.
Baruch Dayan ha’emes-a true chayal in the rebbe’s army
Related comment – in a diary from 5745, a bochur relates that a secretary of the Rebbe came to 770’s shul and said we have to inform the FR (by the tzion) of HaRav Yankel Landau z”l of Bnei Brak’s petira. And a respectable chosid took it upon himself to go.
A second cousin is distant?
Somebody should go to the tzion
