Family members and friends of the Hecht family were at the Old Montefiore cemetery in Cambria Heights, Queens, on Monday, to mark the 21st yahrzeit anniversary of the legendary activist, Rabbi Yaakov Yehuda Hecht OBM.
Buried near the Ohel gravesite of the Rebbe, Rabbi JJ Hecht is remembered as one of the foremost chassidim and askanim in the last generation, heading the National Committee for Furtherance of Jewish Education (NCFJE).
His son Rabbi Shimon Hecht, Director of Chabad in Brooklyn, made a siyum. Rabbi Shea Hecht, who continues his father’s charitable work at the NCFJE, outlined his unique personality in his remarks.
Among the speakers was Rabbi Moshe Feller, Head Shliach of Minnesota, who related how Rabbi JJ Hecht’s manner and slang helped him, an American boy, connect to the Rebbe and chassidus.
“I am a first generation Lubavitcher,” he told the crowd of men and women gathered. “When I first came to the Rebbe I needed a chossid that I would be able to relate to, and I found that in Rabbi Hecht.
“With sports phrases like ‘knock the yetzer harah out of the box’ when he translated a sicha, it showed me how a Yankee can be a chossid.”
If we had more like him here, we would be in a much better state. Rabbi JJ, Kerr a velt in Gan Eden and help bring all of us Moshiach NOW!!!
