Rabbi Yehoshua B. Gordon, Director of Chabad in the Valley of California, has received an outpouring of condolences from online students from around the world following the passing of his mother, Rebbetzin Miriam Gordon OBM, last week.
During the days of shiva, hundreds of students submitted their condolences through Rabbi Gordon’s daily class page on Chabad.org.
These emails were printed out and brought to the shiva house each day. Earlier today, after shiva ended, Rabbi Gordon filmed a message to express his gratitude to those who reached out to him in his time of mourning.
In this video, Rabbi Gordon briefly tells the story of his mother’s life including her early life in Harlem and Boro Park as a member of the illustrious Simpson family, one of the first chassidic families in America.
He then describes her married life as the rebbetzin of the venerable Shliach Rabbi Sholom Ber Gordon OBM.
In his personal reflections, Rabbi Gordon talks about how his mother spent the last Shabbos of her life in New Orleans, LA and also shares unique words of consolation that the Rebbe told his father and grandfather at the shiva of his paternal grandmother in 1957.
“When someone passes away,” said the Rebbe to the Gordon family, “They don’t leave. They just go up to the second floor.”
