Rabbi Dovid Goldstein, an elder Chosid of Tzfas, Israel passed away on Tuesday, Iyar 16, 5776.
He was 84.
R’ Dovid was from the elder Chabad Chasidim, who merited to attend a farbrengen as well as a number of Yechidus meetings with the Frierdiker Rebbe.
R’ Dovid was born in Boro Park, Brooklyn to his parents R’ Moshe Yehuda and Mrs. Chaya Malka Goldstein, who were not Chabad Chasidim, yet were known in their former hometown as “The Shomer Shabbos,” being the only ones who kept Shabbos in the city.
R’ Dovid’s elder brother, the famed educator “Uncle Yossi” Goldstein became a Chabad Chosid, and R’ Dovid soon followed.
As a youth, R’ Dovid wanted to learn in Tomchei Temimim, however his parents did not allow him to due to the distance between his home and the Yeshiva, and their concern for some issues he had with his health. He told the Previous Rebbe about his wish, however the Rebbe instructed him to obey his parents.
Even so, R’ Dovid spent much time at 770, walking there from a distance away on Shabbos and Yom Tov.
During the years he received many letters and answers from the Rebbe and the Frierdiker Rebbe which he treasured throughout his life.
He later moved to Israel, living in the city of Netanya, marrying relatively late in life. He later moved to Tzfas and began attending the Chabad Shul full time.
He is survived by his wife Rina and children Yossi Goldstein – Crown Heights, Menachem Goldstein – Monsey, NY, Rivky Shimon – Monsey, NY, Devorah Weissberg – Monsey, NY, Shalom Dov Ber Goldstein – Israel, Shulamis Weiss – Rechovot, Israel, Sari Malkin – Modiin Illit, Israel, Chaya Malka Malka – Israel.
He is also survived by his brother R’ Shlomo Goldstein – Baltimore, MD and Rebetzin Dina (Morah Dina) Rosengarten – Brooklyn.
The Levaya will take place today in Israel.
Rabbi Yossi Goldstein will be sitting Shiva in Crown Heights at 723 Montgomery St.
