Rabbi Dovid Feinstein, Rosh Yeshiva of Mesivtha Tifereth Jerusalem in New York City and a member of Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of Agudath Israel of America, passed away on Friday, 19 Cheshvan 5781.
He was 91 and has recently been in poor health.
He was born in 1929 to Rabbi Moshe Feinstein and his wife Mrs. Shima (nee Kustanovitch). They lived in the town of Luban in the Soviet Union (today Belarus) where his father served as a rov for 16 years.
His parents immigrated to the United States in 1937 taking with their children Pesach Chaim Feinstein, Dovid, Shifra Tendler and Faye Shisgal. A fifth child Reuven Feinstein was born in New York City.
Settling on the Lower East Side, Rabbi Moshe Feinstein became the Rosh Yeshiva of Mesivtha Tifereth Jerusalem and became the foremost halachic posek of his generation.
Upon his father’s passing in 1986, Rabbi Dovid Feinstein succeeded him to lead the Manhattan branch which includes an elementary and high school and kollel. His brother Rabbi Dovid Feinstein leads the branch of the yeshiva in Staten Island.
Rabbi Dovid Feinstein was a member of Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of Agudath Israel of America and a prolific author, penning at least 9 books on such topics as halacha, Torah and the Jewish calendar.
“Despite his unassuming and humble nature, people worldwide turned to him to decide psak halachah, as his phone was busy all hours of the day and night,” Hamodia reported.
He was in touch with many rabbis and poskim, among them Rabbi Yaacov Schwei OBM, a member of the Crown Heights Beis Din who passed away this past year.
“The entire Orthodox community benefited from his Torah wisdom and guidance for decades–the pain and loss overwhelm,” Agudath Israel said in a statement.

Many people who were not breathing have been revived through CPR and live years after. So how can not breathing be defined as dead especially when the heart is still beating
Sorry to hear of the loss of this Torah leader.
The world is getting darker and darker.
A friend called questioning the accuracy of COLLIVE.COM about Reb Moshe ZT”L unknown son Pesach Chaim. I directed him to:
אגרות משה יורה דעה חלק א סימן קצ”ח
where Reb Moshe Writes:
בימי אבלי על בני הילד פסח חיים ע”ה
etc..
So COLLIVE.COM is absolutely correct!!
Meshulem Feivel Hakohen Charach
Well almost correct… Pesach Chaim a”h was nifter in Europe before R Moshe ztl immigrated ., as is clear from the Tshuva – Ellul 5686 Luban.
In the Tshuva he discusses a Shach in Hilchos Aveilus which he noticed during the aveilus which had ended 10 days prior….
Adam gadol, zichrono librachah.
COL writes that Reb Moshe Came to the United States with their children
Pesach Chaim Feinstein. This is inaccurate, because Pesach Chaim died in Russia as a child, as Reb Moshe writes in:
אגרות משה יורה דעה חלק א סימן קצ”ח
בימי אבלי על בני הילד פסח חיים ע”ה
Translation:
“When I was sitting Shiva for the death of my son Pesach Chaim…
etc..
and this Teshuva was written in Luban, Russia, כ”ב אלול ת’רפ”ו
corresponding to September 1, 1926
N.K.
Important to note that R Moshes grandmother studied in cheder with the Tzemach Tzedek after her father the local Rov asked the Alter Rebbe for advice, as recorded in hakdoma to one of the later volumes of Igros Moshe
So sad to lose such a Talmud Chacham .
Truly , everyone should read his writings
