The Crown Heights community is urged to be on alert during the next few days, following the fatal shooting of an unarmed man by police officers on Wednesday.
Friends and family members of Saheed Vassell, known to locals as struggling with mental health issues, have expressed their anger Wednesday night following his shooting near Montgomery street and Utica Avenue.
In the wake of the incident, various outside activist groups have scheduled protests in the neighborhood, some of which have histories of violence.
Some of the groups who have advertised on social media to rally crowds to the area are The Justice League and others known for anti-police movement.
Multiple demonstrations by these and other groups are scheduled to take place Thursday in Crown Heights from 4:30 pm to 11:00 pm.
District Leader Geoffrey Davis warned residents to be on alert during the next few days, including Jewish residents who will be walking to and from synagogue for the Shvii Shel Pesach learning.
“We don’t expect any violence, but residents should be alert for the next few days in light of yesterday’s shooting,” Geoffrey Davis told COLlive.com.
“Residents should travel in groups, and go directly to and from the Synagogue. Walk in groups, with a family member or friend,” Davis advised.
The NYPD has said that there will be a large police presence in the area to ensure the safety of all residents.
“Tonight there will be numerous extra cops patrolling the Crown Heights area, assuring the safety of all communities and everyone to worship in peace and safety,” NYPD 71st Precinct officer Vinny Martinos told COLlive.
“We ask people to be aware of their surroundings and be extra vigilant. Try to walk in groups and in well-lit areas over Yomtov. Please avoid groups of demonstrators should you see any,” the Shmira volunteer patrol group advised.
“Do not get in to any verbal arguments and walk away from anyone that attempts to start one,” they said.
If any issues arise, residents should not hesitate to call 911 or the 71st precinct.

When someone is killed in those countries there is never a protest or demonstration, let alone riot! This is a very sensitive subject and time right now. I think its best to refrain from judgement on all sides and pray for peace in our neighborhood. If you read whats going on in this country you need to understand the anger that is felt in our community and be compassionate and not judgmental..
