A pro-Palestinian demonstration is planned for Monday, April 28, at 7:00 PM at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The Shomrim Jewish patrol has warned that protestors might be moving towards Crown Heights.
An announcement titled “Crown Heights Run it Back!!” stated, “We will flood the streets of Crown’s Heights to inform them Zionism is not welcome here.” It concluded with the slogan “Free Palestine” and encouraged participants to bring flags and keffiyehs.
In a notice to the community, Shomrim wrote: “Shomrim is in constant contact with the NYPD and officials to ensure that our community remains protected and that Crown Heights stays safe. The NYPD has assured us that Crown Heights will be protected and that the agitators will not pose a threat. Please be careful and stay alert at all times.”
Shomrim recommended that residents avoid visiting the Barclays Center or the area near Grand Army Plaza on Monday to prevent any potential confrontation.
“If, G-d forbid, agitators enter Crown Heights, we have the right to defend ourselves – with caution, responsibility, and within the law,” they said.
The Vaad Hakohol – Crown Heights Jewish Community Council said they have been in touch with the NYPD as well and that “a comprehensive security plan is in place, and the protesters will not be permitted to come into direct contact with the Crown Heights Jewish community.”
They added, “We strongly urge community members not to engage with the protesters. Their goal is to provoke a response that could bring negative consequences to our community. Please continue with regular activities and remain alert.”
Monday’s demonstration was announced a few days after a violent antisemitic protest took place at 770 Eastern Parkway, leading to clashes with local Jewish residents.
On Thursday, protesters gathered at the Chabad-Lubavitch World Headquarters just before 9:30 PM as protesters rallied against an appearance by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who was visiting the neighborhood. He attended a Siyum HaRambam event in the 770 Shul in the evening, attended by hundreds of Jewish men.
“What happened tonight in Crown Heights was outrageous and deeply disturbing,” Rabbi Yaacov Behrman, community activist and Director of the Jewish Future Alliance, wrote on X after the protest. “A group of antisemitic protesters gathered at the intersection of Eastern Parkway and Kingston Avenue—the very heart of this heavily populated Jewish neighborhood—spewing hateful, inflammatory rhetoric at innocent passersby, myself included.”
The protesters stood at the busiest intersection of the Jewish community in Crown Heights, and shouted antisemitic slogans like “We don’t want Zionists here,” and genocidal chants such as “We don’t want two states, we want all of it,” and “Resistance is justified.”
“How dare you come into my neighborhood—where I’ve lived for over 40 years—and tell me I don’t belong? I absolutely belong here. My family, my neighbors, and my community belong here,” Behrman wrote.
