A fierce crowd of anti-Israel activists gathered outside Chabad-Lubavitch World Headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, New York, on Thursday night.
Wearing keffiyehs and facemasks, they are protesting the planned visit of Israel’s National Security Minister, Itamar Ben Gvir.
He is known for his strong stance against terrorism and is one of the leading right-wing politicians in Israel.
He is currently visiting the United States with stops in Florida, New York and Washington, DC, meeting Jewish communities and government officials.
Ben Gvir earlier visited the main shul of 770, and is scheduled to return there to speak at a Siyum Harambam ceremony celebrating the daily study of Jewish law.
Ahead of his return, pro-Palestinian protestors have gathered on Eastern Parkway and Kingston Avenue in the heart of the Jewish community.
Holding “Free Palestine” signs, they were joined by a few anti Zionist Chassidim associated with Satmar.
Video footage showed the anti-Israel protestors in heated exchanges with local residents who asked them to protest from a distance and not block entrance to the main shul.
COLlive.com was told the NYPD declared a Level 2 mobilization, deploying extra officers and specialized units to handle a possible escalation of violence. A helicopter droned overhead.
Hundreds of Crown Heights residents showed up to counter protest, and a loudpseaker blared Israeli dance music which drowned out the anti Israel chants.
A few Israeli Yeshiva students were seen being arrested by police after some confrontations broke out.

I am not a fan of Ben Gvir. I think he is despicable. And I don’t think he should be the guest of our community. That being said, the protesters are even worse. And I hope that everyone stays safe. And that they don’t harass Jews on the street. And if they do, I hope the NYPD locks them up for a long time.

I was at a reception for Ben Gvir tonight. After reading about him in the media that demonized him all these years, I thought it was a good opportunity to get to know him in person. Please see what the Rebbe very strongly says about the Israeli flag (and hatikva, Yom HaAtzmaut) and the Rebbe loves Eretz Yisroel and the holy Yidden living there, and supported them in the strongest ways, but there are clear guidelines about these things and Torah based explanations for these guidelines.

I don’t see any benefit in inviting Ben Gvir to 770, it only puts our community in harms way. The Rebbe made it clear that Chabad is apolitical. Inviting someone who most people think is a very far right wing person 1. endangers the real work of Chabad – hafatza 2. invites the pro pals which could lead to violence.
Does Ben Gvir help our hafatza? Does he help our limud hachassidus? In our hiskashrus? If not, then he has no place speaking in 770 and worse in a siyum horambam.

In a world where so many are against Israel and Jews, the very least you can do is show your support!
The Rebbe invited many politicians and prime ministers and spoke long hours with them. And yes, many do help with Hafatza, though that’s entirely not the point.
