Captain John J. Lewis, the new Commanding Officer of the New York Police Department’s 71st Precinct, got what some might say a typical welcome to the Crown Heights neighborhood.
A string of criminal incidents – some of them targeted at the Jewish residents – occurred this past week and the captain was quick to show who is in control.
On Thursday night he was seen visiting 770 Eastern Parkway with Mayor Michael Bloomberg‘s aide Fred Kreizman and Chanina Sperlin, director of inter-governmental relations for the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council.
According to one bystander, Captain Lewis said he was there “to let people know that the neighborhood can be calm and that it is protected.”
The captain chatted with Mashpia Rabbi Shalom Jacobson and then continued to attend two L’Chaim engagement parties held at the hall of Lubavitcher Yeshiva on Crown Street.
It wasn’t his first visit to the Yeshiva as he has already done the rounds visiting the directors of the major Jewish institutions and organizations in Crown Heights this past week.
Another visit of his, COLlive has learned, was to Kings County Hospital where he visited the Lubavitch victim who was beaten and mugged the night before.
He told the man and his mother that a new commend post will be stationed at the intersection of Sterling Street and New York Avenue, where the crime took place.
Lewis added that CCTV cameras from nearby building helped them identify the attacker and they are waiting for the Jewish man to identify him in a line-up in the police station once he recovers.
Back in 770, Captain Lewis told locals that he has called for police back-up and that for the next couple of weeks some 30 extra police will be assigned to patrol the streets of Crown Heights.

the police car is taking up valuable parking spots! there is an entire station one block away and that didnt stop this beating from happening so what is one car going to do to stop the assault happening one block down or one block over? you could post a car on every block save one, and that one block will be the site of an attack. no suggestions just venting thanks.

If he can steer clear of Crown Hts SELF HATNIG LUBAVICHERS that do not have local residents’ confidence, things will go well.
And yes, extra officers often means a drop in goons acting up.
And some of the officers- I said some-could really use promotions and recognition for their work.. [ Others, need to be encouraged to follow suit.

[ Others, nothing will help, please just transfer them out and they’ll be some other captain’s problem.]
I agree. Especially the self defence and street smarts. If you don’t know how to fight back you can be a sitting duck. Take it from a guy who’s been doing kickboxing now for a good several months. Besides putting me in much better shape it makes me regret I wasn’t around to help that Jew in distress – where once I would have run a mile.

Captain Lewis shall also take very serious compliance of cops show antismetic. Many cops are very rude and shall cops behavior like that will ne transferred this will show other cops to do there jobs

If I may critique though, please stay away from our communities internal politics because there is much infighting (sadly) so please don’t take sides… Also, please don’t increase the driving citations and only increase the officers that actually protect us from crime.
i hope the extra police will be here to watch for our saety not to give out more tickets but i doubt that .
Having been involved with the security in CH for over 10 years , I have the following statement to make regarding this and similar incidents. 1. The CH leadership must be united and vocal in demanding the best the police can offer for our community. Why do you think we need Shomrim, Capt. Lewis? Because in the past, the police REFUSE to act. The problem is, Shomrim protect, they can’t arrest or book criminals. They are as helpless as the rest of us when it comes to any kind of follow-through.
Are you going to shake up these lazy, anti-semitic officers? Maybe transfer a few of the worst? And please don’t put your faith in the CHJCC & their people. They don’t help us, either.

Anyways those reading this article can do 1 of 2 things start feeling all comfortable that there is a command post on the block or start learning how to defend yourself starting learning the different tips of how to scout your surroundings and limit your chances of becoming a victim.
