The following is a true story that will make you smile. It involves two gentlemen, let’s call them David and Jacob, living in a Chabad House community on the West Coast of America.
David’s house needed some significant pipework. He called up Jacob, a plumber in the community, to work on the pipes and fix the problems.
Jacob did just that. The job was extensive and expensive. David was by no means wealthy and really didn’t have the money to cover this unforeseen expense.
A good Jewish mind he did have. David proposed a novel solution to Jacob, one that would pay Jacob in more ways than one.
David had a standing subscription to Chayenu. He didn’t use it because he accessed the bright booklets in his local Chabad House. David knew that Jacob the Plumber would love to plumb the depths for Torah but didn’t have the wherewithal or opportunity.
“How about,” said David to Jacob, “I pay you for the job well done with something sweeter than honey and more valuable than gold, something that will fill your mind as much as your wallet? How about I pay you with Our Life!”
Jacob was delighted. A plumber understands that the words of Torah are channeled through the pipes of Chayenu; and when life clogs the channels, a providential act can help release the living waters of life, allowing them to run free.
