A group of Israeli teens on their way to a camp the United States found themselves stranded at JFK airport Sunday and received help from an unexpected source.
The kids’ Delta connecting flight was rescheduled for the next morning due to bad weather, and they had been waiting at the Delta Baggage Claim for their luggage for hours, without an end in sight.
However, help came from an unexpected source. A group of Chabad volunteers, who were doing their usual Mivtzoim at the Chabad Air booth near the El Al afternoon flight, were approached by an El Al employee. The employee had received a call from a Delta Airlines captain, informing him of the stranded children. The El Al employee asked if they could help.
The volunteers sprang into action. After several phone calls to Delta and airport security, and finally to the parents of one of the children, they were able to locate the group. They told the Chabad bochurim that they had bought some popcorn from a vending machine but were starving and couldn’t go anywhere until they had their luggage.
The volunteers drove to the nearby Five Towns area and picked up pizza, fries, drinks, and bagels – all on the house, once the vendors found out what it was for. They delivered the food to the grateful children, right in the middle of baggage claims.
After eating, many of the grateful kids agreed to put on Tefillin as well.

The Aibershter and the Rebbe are smiling at you, To those stranded boys who had the decency to put on tefillin either because they felt it was the right thing to do, or because it was a way of expressing gratitude to their benefactors: Good on you! may you continue to grow in ruchnius and gashmius, including middos tovos. You displayed laudable maturity and hakoras hatov to The Aibershter and to your benefactors. One thing is for sure: as all these kids grow older and more aware of what it takes… Read more »
