Picture of the Day

Chasidic reggae musician Matisyahu was in Iowa for a concert and spent Shabbos at Chabad House of Des Moines. Shluchim Rabbi Yossi Jacobson and Rabbi Levi Goldstein held a Farbrengen for 12-13 of Tammuz, when the Previous Rebbe was freed from Russian prison. More

strong jew
July 8, 2009 12:47 pm

Obviously some of you understand where Matis is coming from. He grew up following Phish and smoking weed. He’s come a long way since then. Hadar Torah did a great deal of good for him. Why do people always beat up on this guy? For You growing up in CH your entire life, you were probably never exposed to 1/10 of what Matis was. The Rebbe encouraged people to use their talents even after becoming religious and that’s exactly what he did. He’s a dedicated jew who who’s strong in his faith. He always wears his tzitit and yarlmulka in… Read more »

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SHLUCHIM WHO HOSTED MATISYAHU AND FAMILY. YOU ACTED IN THE TRUE SPIRIT OF CHABAD. THE REBBE MUST BE VERY PROUD OF YOU. THE REBBE GAVE THE GREATEST RESPECT TO PEOPLE HE KNEW FULL WELL KNOCKED LUBAVITCH AND EVERYTHING IT STOOD FOR, AND THEN WON THEM OVER ONLY BECAUSE HE RESPONDED AS HE DID. HE LOOKED AT THE NESHAMA NOT THE CHITZONIUS. WHO ARE WE TO DECIDE WHO’S NESHAMA IS GREATER THAN THE OTHR GUYS???? I REMEMBER THE “GESHE” CHOSID WHO COMPLAINED – YEARS AGO- TO THE REBBE THAT HIS DAUGHTER WANTED TO MARRY A “B T” AND… Read more »

FOR HEAVENS SAKE

TO WHAT IS HE ON AND ALL THE REST IN THAT VANE: YOU SOUND LIKE A BUNCH OF SNAGS!!!! NOT LUBABS!!! WHERE I COME FROM THE ESSENSE OF CHABAD IS “TO LOVE A FELLOW JEW” REGARDLESS OF WHO HE IS OR WHERE HE COMES FROM OR EVEN WHERE HE THINKS HE’S GOING. WAKE UP GUYS AND REMEMBER WHO WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE!!! INCASE YOU FORGOT, WE’RE SUPPOSED TO BE THEE ONES THAT LOVE EVERY JEW, NO MATTER WHO!! I’LL SAY IT AGAIN “LOVE EVERY JEW, NO MATTER WHO” (YES, THAT EVEN MEANS SOMEONE WHO IS -OR ISN’T A MASHICHIST… Read more »

to my fellow Lubavitchers
July 6, 2009 2:19 pm

It is foolish to opine in a manner counter to chassidus. As a Shaliach I am embarrassed at the immaturity of people online. Is this the way the Rebbe taught us to behave? HOw would the Rebbe respond? even better How would the Rebbe respond to the way chasiddim write about others yidden on line.

To all the critics

K’shoit Atzmecha – criticize yourself first. Suggestion, you can start with not talking badly about others.

Love your fellow Jew as yourself, that’s the Mitzvah we all have. G-d doesn’t need you to be his policeman.

Let him go?
July 5, 2009 8:23 pm

Excuse me, but I bet Mattisyahu discovered some of the hateful people in Lubavitch, who have shown up here as well, and decided that he’s be better off elsewhere. Let’s not prove how correct he is. If he feels let down by Lubavitch, it is OUR fault for not imparting a better picture. One more thing, you guys hiding behind your computer and telling Shluchim who spend all day making you and your organization you’re so concerend about look good, and you’re telling them who and what to be Mekarev! This is about as messed up as can be! Please… Read more »

What Matis said about Chabad in Dec 2008:

It because of people like you that Matisyahu left Lubavitch.

Chabad shabbos tables
July 5, 2009 11:17 am

are and always have been open to anyone, no matter their ideas. I doubt he actually shared his ideas, and if he did I am sure the Jacobsons knew how to answer him so no damage was done.

This singer may be a weirdo and a user, but he is a Yid.

Still, I would expect an apology and a thank you from him or his agent at this point, especially with his pic appearing here.

Did not realize he was but a guest.
July 5, 2009 11:11 am

This Yid is indeed not in cherem and therefore should be welcome in any Chabad House as a guest. However, especially as he was just a guest, his pic does not belong up here. Why give him publicity after he has derided Chabad – and after he used us and wrung us out like a dishrag? Far more important and more decent guests have passed through many a Chabad House. Their pics are not up here, and many of them would be angry at the breach of privacy if their pics did appear here. This one just got free publicity… Read more »

I think it is important to realize that he has publicly refered to Lubavitch as a cult. Do you invite people to your Shabbos table who share these ideas?

Where do you get off?!?
July 5, 2009 9:46 am

Matis has done nothing wrong. He is still a frum yid.

Let our Ahavas Yosroel Shine
July 5, 2009 9:12 am

To my fellow Shluchim and friends

Matisyahu had a concert in Des Moines.
We hosted him and his family over shabbos just like we host hundreds of people who pass through Des Moines.
There was no private show or demands, we simply enjoyed another wonderful Jewish family at our shabbos table.
We continue to do our shlichus with joy and a good heart.

Rabbi Yossi and Chanie Jacobson

Quiet down, please.
July 5, 2009 9:02 am

He’s not a user. He’s a person. He has feelings and is entitled to his opinion. We, as chassidim, need to continue to have ahavas yisroel regardless of whether he is a lubavitcher or not.

Loz em tziru (leave him alone)
Whats up with all this negativity; he is his own man, why do you say he takes advantage of shluchim? We’ve hosted him and he and his wife are very sweet

That said, I imagine if he was never observant and was doing his music as a secular Jew our perspective would be considerably more positive. So I stress that we shouldnt be criticizing. He does inspire a certain pride in many yidden – and while it isn’t our derech and certainly isn’t yiddishkeit – it is not our business to be arbiters of the pop music scene.
But, again, shluchim shouldn’t be fooled into wasting their time and resources which are hekdesh on being photographed with him etc. vdal.

Yossi Jacobson A True Shliach!!!
July 5, 2009 5:56 am

Yossi Jacobson A true Shliach He cant say know NO to anyone and gets used by people all the time,,, and he continue to do the rebbe shlichus with a smile on his face…………

Ps. Yes Matisyahu is a user and abuser to chabad and shluchim specially!!! But I guess yossi u are doing the right thing as the rebbe sent you and all shluchim to service ALL JEWS to there need’s, wherever and whatever they fond them self, So keep up you good work!!!

It saddens me that shluchim continue o associate with him. He has repeatedly and publicly repudiated Lubavitch. Then he needs a kosher meal and shluchim are running to him. We shouldn’t be criticizing or ostarcising him. Mr. Miller is free to behave as he wishes and associate with whom he chooses – but for shluchim to go out of their way and be photographed with him is baffling. It seems as if he feels he can say terrible things about us, including refering to us backhandidly as a cult and then expect us to deliver him food. Let him do… Read more »

Look at his glassy eyed stare. Don’t you see who he is and what he is? I fully understand and support any shaliach who brings him out because for some crowds he is great, but COLLIve, must you give this guy any more of the 15 mins of fame that he uses Chabad for?
