Kosher meals that have been made available for pickup at select public school locations across Brooklyn and Queens have now come to Crown Heights.
It was announced that the strictly Kosher meals would be available beginning last week, however many Crown Heights residents expressed concern that the Public Schools chosen as distribution sites were not within walking distance and would be difficult to get to.
Community activist Yaacov Behrman and Arna Lipkind, the Jewish community’s liaison to Councilmember Majority Leader Laurie Cumbo, both reached out to Pinny Ringel of Mayor Bill De Blasio‘s office for assistance in rectifying the situation.
Thanks to their efforts, the Mayor’s office notified COLlive that one of the Brooklyn locations has been changed to K221 at 791 Empire Blvd, near Troy Avenue, beginning on Wednesday, April 29.
The second Crown Heights location will remain P.S. 289 – 900 St Marks Avenue, Brooklyn 11213.
The grab and go meals are available for all, and are being provided by Borenstein Caterers under the brand name of “Regal-Glatt.” The Kashrus supervision is being provided by Volove Kashrus – Rabbi N.E. Teitelbaum of Congregation Nachlas Avos Volove.
The Mayor’s office assured COLlive that they have ordered a large quantity of food, and there will be enough Kosher food for all, anyone who would like is invited to come and enjoy.
Meals will be available for children and families from 7:30 am to 11:30 am, and for adults from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm.
The Kosher meals were made available to accommodate the city’s large population of Orthodox Jews through the efforts of State Senator Simcha Felder, Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein, and Councilman Kalman Yeger with the NYC Department of Education.
“As children are out of school, it is vitally important to ensure that all kids have food to eat regardless of their religion or dietary needs,” said Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein.
Thank you SImcha!
Will it be the same menu every day ?
Thank you Arna for doing such a great job.
Trying to fix the issues but everyone should have realistic expectations.
I went all the way to the parkside location today and they had many leftovers at 1pm. Now that both locations will be near the Jewish area of Crown heights they will probably be enough.
And her office for being one step ahead. These changes dont take a minute and require patience and perseverance, Thank you for watching out for all your constituents.
there are those of us who can use this but can’t go leave the house due to isolation
Is there any arrangement for these people
Ask anyone in your building /block to pick up for you. Extra Mitzvah all
Yes you can ask a neighbor or the Ze la ze or wait till next qeek there amy be deliverys, stay tuned.
I believe in the next week or so there will be deliverys through the CHJCC. You can call them to check. There is also a program in the community on whatsapp called Ze la Ze.
In addition there is a group on facebook called Mutual Aid Crown Heights. Not sure if they do free, but they do do errands.
Thank you for your work Arna!
I appreciate the work of these community leaders in listening to even the smaller concerns of the community. This will be helpful for my family.
Remember to be kind and grateful to the workers if you come to pick up lunch.
I picked up meals in brooklyn, where I work. The meals have been the same every day. If my kids don’t like chumus there is nothing but a roll as substantial food. I wish they would have a choice or every day a different menu so we can really use it.
