After standing abandoned for over two decades, the Kollel building behind 770 has begun to be demolished. In its place, a large temporary tent structure is being erected on the property to serve as a new and spacious Zal study hall for bochurim.
The planned tent will contain 300 seats and will provide a dignified, comfortable, and accessible atmosphere for learning. This new initiative comes in response to the long-felt need in the Crown Heights neighborhood for a suitable place for the bochurim who dedicate themselves to Torah study.
The project is being carried out in collaboration with Merkos L’Inyonei Chinuch and Machne Israel. All the partners involved are working with great sensitivity.
The project managers said: “This is planned for the time being, until a greater expansion of 770 will take place. We want to thank a group of avreichim, including Rabbi Shmuly Avtzon, Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Altein, and many others, for their extensive help and support for this project.”

Ah, we love our tents, dont we. lol
Good move.
I think there’s also some space, under the women section on Kingston side, that would be fairly inexpensive to convert if done properly..it would help bring peace in the world too
Women’s section kingston is very low down
Anything but to actually expand and renovate 770, unless the plan is to attach this behind. People just want to be able to go the Rebbe’s Shul with comfort, but this just allows for more Meshichistim to do as they please. Yes I’m categorizing all Meshichistim here, as none put out an apology to the community for the disaster that happened this past Tishrei.
This is for the normal Bochrim.
Pity they have to leave 770 proper and go seek a proper place elswere….
May there be more and more places to learn Torah
what are they going to do when the winter comes and it is cold outside ??
So should have heating and stuff
Where there is something called HEATING!!
Put in heat..
just place a heater maybe…
Hello why are the workers hired to help the men’s sections but fixing the windows and repairing the holes in the wood and ladies bathroom needs replaced people r also telling me but I said the gabaim won’t hire the workers please bring them to the women’s section on eastern parkway, tnx.
Also they did a bunch of work on expanding eastern parkway women’s shul, and this article has nothing to do with regular upkeep of the existing shuls.
The men’s bathrooms are 5* while the women’s…
Nice ,but who needs another yeshiva or whatever what we really need is for the actual 770 shul to be expanded, the rebbe wantes for the 770 shul to be expanded, there’s not enough room

We don’t need to take 770 Bochurim out of 770. We need to expand 770. There are some things that everyone agrees with tzvatim on. Just that it should be done in a way befitting the Rebbe’s Shul. Why on earth is this still going on. We need to campaign to get Yudel and the Gaboim to work together for once otherwise there are gonna be no walls left in 770 because of what Rashlatz and Tzvatim have been doing.
This is true and it will happen soon.
It doesn’t take long to build a 3story building
looks like half the building is done. why not finish it and make use of it however. if the expansion conversation is too volatile, so be it. that building was never meant as expansion of 770. it was to be a renovated kolel.
It will be the expansion place
what does Chabad never do anything properly? what’s the machla of half solutions to any building? you think a Williamsburg organization or BP organization would put up a tent? why do we act like shlepers? Ohlei torah is patched from 70 different building copy and pasted together like an arts and crafts project – rip down the buildings and build massive beautiful buildings that people can use and respect. instead our mosdos look like one legged homeless camps. 770,OT, Beth rivka crown street – Russian peasant mentality….build big build beautiful build with class.
It’s a technical thing, all the moisdus start with a building and then they bh grow and need more space do u expect them to shut down for a few years do that they can build new buildings?
Also plenty of other communities are split into few buildings all over! It’s pretty common
Many many many mosdos in NY expand , they relocate – they do partial sides of builds with the other in use, I’m in construction – trust me it’s more then doable. Our mosdos
Are the only ones that look like bad arts and crafts projects
Tear down a solid brick building and put in a sturdy tent instead
First people demand a tent, and now complain about a tent. Yes, 770 should be expanded, but realistically this won’t happen for a long time. A tent is a great improvement from what we have there now…
It will happen, and very soon. Look. Yudel doesn’t want to serve tzfas a silver platter. 100% understandable. Gaboim don’t care if tzfas take over. Masses want more room to breathe in 770. One day soon a group of people will approach the rabbonim who rule over the gabboim and Will ask the rabbonim to put pressure on the gabboim to either make a real seder, which is their job to begin with, or step down and give the position to able bodied people who can enforce seder in the Rebbe’s shul. Once the new set of gabboim makes a… Read more »
Shreklech to put political conditions on the expansion.
We need to expand 770, why should we care tzfatim or not , the Rebbe wants 770 expanded so we need to do it right away , !
The main point I think should be to focus on what the Rebbe requested in beis rabenu shebabel, expand 770, let there be tzfatim it doesn’t bother me, the main thing should be enough room for everyone, but not chas vshalom to take down yechi signs or to stop the shvil, we need both also the emuna but also the expansion,it should not be a contradiction ! Let’s all get along no matter the views and let’s expand!
You explained part of the issue delaying expansion, but not the only one. The building itself is a tremendous undertaking that could take many years to plan, fund, build etc. I am not being a Debby downer, I am just being realistic. A tent is a great temporary structure that can serve the community until the expansion is ready to happen.
I was the Chaiman of CB 9 for 34 years. Let me explain to all of the ” Wise men ” of our community some of the laws and regulations the govern residential properties such as Union Street. There is a law on residential blocks in R2 and R4 zones known as “Conforming Use”, meaning that the main points of egress must be the same and the height of each home the same with exceptions made for a partial 3rd floor (60%) of total area in certain cases. Union Street is one of the streets in our community that is… Read more »
