Assemblymember David Weprin joined Rabbi Shmuel Butman and State Senator Zellnor Myrie in Crown Heights on Wednesday, in addition to a host of community leaders to commemorate the 119th anniversary of the birth of the Rebbe on Yud Aleph Nissan.
The resolution, sponsored by Weprin in the Assembly and Myrie in the Senate, passed the legislature earlier this week.
“As a proud observant Jew, I am thrilled to sponsor this resolution, as I have done for my entire Assembly tenure, honoring the Rebbe’s birthday,” said Assemblyman Weprin. “Rabbi Schneerson, of blessed memory, led a life of service, fully committed to the Lubavitcher movement and fellow Jews here in the United States and around the world. His dedication to lifelong learning and his commitment to educating others should serve as a shining example to all people everywhere.
“The Rebbe’s reputation as a moral leader, along with his grace, dignity, and compassion towards his fellow man lives on in the spirit of those he touched throughout his long life on this earth. Thank you to Speaker Heastie and my Assembly colleagues for recognizing what many have known all along about the Rebbe. And may his memory always be a blessing.”

His life was filled with philanthropic and scholarly pursuits, and his leadership reverberates to this day. He never lost sight of our shared humanity and, by his word and deed, honored and edified those who are often left behind by society. I am proud to honor the Rebbe and the work he inspired,” said Senator Zellnor Myrie.
“When the Rebbe is speaking about education, he means education for all the children of the world regardless of race, ethnicity or creed. The Rebbe says that they have eyes to see, and ears to hear. Assemblymember David Weprin has been the chair of the celebration for the Rebbe’s birthday in Albany and he did it as a great friend and with great heart and soul,” said Rabbi Butman, Executive Director of Lubavitch Youth Organization (Tzach) in New York.
Elected in 2010, David I. Weprin represents the 24th Assembly District of New York State in Queens. Comprised of the partial or entire communities of Briarwood, Bellerose Manor, Fresh Meadows, Glen Oaks, Hillcrest, Holliswood, Jamaica Estates, Jamaica Hills, Oakland Gardens, Queens Village, Richmond Hill, and Utopia; the 24th Assembly district boasts one of the most diverse constituencies in New York State.
