Rabbi Menachem Mendel and Rikki Cunin (nee Junik) were appointed as the new Chabad Shluchim to the Wilshire Corridor in Los Angeles, California.
The Wilshire Corridor stretches from the western edge of Beverly Hills into Westwood and boasts one of the largest concentrations of Jewish residents in the Western United States.
Rabbi Cunin said that given the exponential growth of the Jewish community in West Los Angeles, establishing a permanent Chabad center became imperative.
“We are honored to be part of the Rebbe’s mission, spreading Yiddishkeit, and preparing the world for the coming of Moshiach,” he stated.
The new Shluchim were appointed by Rabbi Boruch Shlomo Cunin, his grandfather who serves as the Head Shliach and Director of West Coast Chabad.
He noted the timing of the new Shlichus, announced ahead of the 30th anniversary of Gimmel Tammuz.
“I remember Gimmel Tammuz 5754, 30 years ago, when we stood there in shock, words escaping us; the darkness of Galus seemed to deepen,” the senior Rabbi Cunin said.
“It was then that I recalled previously writing to the Rebbe, ‘When facing a seemingly insurmountable challenge, we open a Chabad House!’ The Rebbe responded with, ‘Lechatchila ariber un ariber.’ With tears yet unwavering resolve, I pledged to the Rebbe, ‘Rebbe, I promise, we will expand your mission, safeguard your institutions, and open even more!'”
