In his battle against the establishment of a Hamas-run Palastinian state, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recalled a long-ago statement by the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
Netanyahu has recently completed a diplomatic tour of European capitals aimed at stalling moves towards world recognition of a Palestinian state.
He has met with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and British Prime Minister David Cameron.
Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas has been pushing to obtain the United Nations’ backing this autumn for an independent state.
In Paris, Netanyahu addressed the possibility that the UN could nonetheless recognize a unilaterally declared Palestinian state.
“Sure there are automatic majorities in the UN. They could say the world is flat and pass it, if they wanted,” he said.
“But the leading countries, like the U.S., and now Britain and France, all say they expect those who want peace with Israel to recognize Israel. This is elementary.”
“The idea is not to establish a Palestinian state to continue the conflict as Hamas wants, but to establish a state so as to end the conflict,” he continued. “What they want now is to form a state so as to continue trying to destroy us.”
To explain the challange, Netanyahu was reminded by what the Lubavitcher Rebbe told him about the UN, that a single candle can spread precious light even in a dark place like the UN.
Journalist Hagai Segal reported that “in Netanyahu’s eyes, the dark place of our days is the diplomatic arena. And that candle he was trying to light was with his trips this week to London and Paris.”

I pray for prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the living God of Abraham, Jacob and Isaac wil give wisdom, discernment and grace to him to do what he must do.
I bless all the Jewish people of Israel and I bless the city of Jerusalem with shalom within her walls. Lets keep praying together for the Jewish nation that the Lords will be done!
how come hes the only one who if he quotes the rebbe has to listen to the rebbe? we all have the right to quote the rebbe when we want but if bibi does it …..
I think they did once actually decide the world was flat.
Bibi is a puppet. Perez runs Israel. Perez is aganist the Jewish people.
did he ever actually give land?
theres things you gotta say and do when theres that much international pressure. in the end he does some pretty good stuff.
to all those that criticise bibi – just look at the way he has shown (more than any other recent israeli prime minister) that he is willing to defend us no matter what the international community thinks. he has been more aggressive with and shown the least tolerance to terrorists and their attacks on us. and in regard to him offering a palestinian state, imho – he has to show his major allies that he is not against peaceful palestinians for it is our allies that keep us armed, and support us when the rest of the world condems us.… Read more »
Hypocrite. Bibi, leave our Rebbe alone! You only quote him when it suits you, while you’re stabbing our people in the back. How many times did you relate stories about the Rebbe, and then did the oppsite of what the Rebbe told you? So please, I’m fed up of hearing and reading such hypocrisy from you. We won’t give you any credit. The time we were blind is over!
I pray for peace, wellness and prosperity of Israel and the Jewish people. I pray for the Jewish people to have their own, promised by G-d and deserved homeland Israel, as a frame of their existence in peace and tranquility in all aspects, always and forever. I pray for Israel to be a normal and recognized country in the United Nations and in the mind of all their neighbors and the whole world as well. I pray for myself to go to Israel as soon as possible and see the Holly Land, its wonderful people and its beauty.
What hypocrisy is this. Netanyahu became the first israeli prime minister to mention and offer the creation of a Palestinian state side by side with Israel. Are our memories that short? Now he runs around to undo the very damage he himself has caused!
I LOVE ISR
If he respects the Rebbe so much and what the Rebbe has said about Eretz Yisroel, then why does he negotiate with terrorists about giving away OUR land
