Chabad of Markham hosted an emotional and inspirational evening with Guest Speaker Rabbi Ephraim Simon, Shliach in Teaneck, New Jersey, who told his heroic story of donating his kidney nearly one year ago.
Rabbi Simon’s words contained a powerful message about being a living example of the values one teaches to their children and community.
The momentum continued as the Chabad community honored a woman who helped save the life of a teenager in our community.
The Quint family struggled for months to find a kidney for their daughter, Terri, who had experienced kidney failure and was attached to a home dialysis machine for eight hours a day, six days a week. It would be like this for the rest of Terri’s life, doctors said, if they could not find a donor, and finding a match was proving impossible.
Despite their large and willing families, not one relative was eligible. The offer from a casual acquaintance, Kathy Laszlo, Founder of D.A.N.I. in Toronto —seemed too good to be true. After Kathy heard about the challenge that Terri was going through, she offered her kidney and began the strenuous series of tests of becoming a donor.
Kathy enthralled the audience as she described her exuberance and excitement when she learned that she would be an eligible donor for Terri.
The donor-recipient, Terri, thanked and acknowledged Kathy with a heartwarming speech.
Robyn, Terri’s mom, also expressed her deep gratitude to Kathy on behalf of their family, for giving them back their daughter’s life and dignity.
Rabbi Avraham Plotkin presented a plaque to Kathy, on behalf of the Chabad Markham community, expressing Hakoras Hatov in recognition of her supreme act of life-saving kindness.

Wow – Rabbi Simon is so amazing. How do I know? I made his kidney match and he sent me such inspiring e-mails, before and after his kidney donation! Rabbi Simon had responded to a posting I had on the internet for someone in need of a kidney. Even though he was a back-up for one- he saw other postings I had and just wanted to save the world! He is so special to make this trip all the way to Canada! Anyhow, if anyonoe out there would like more information on kidney donation, please feel free to contact me.… Read more »
