Mrs. Zahava Golda Markowitz, beloved matriarch of a Chabad family, passed away on Friday, 8 Elul, 5783.
She was the wife of the late Rabbi Dr. Yitzchak Markowitz obm who was one of the distinguished Chabad Chasidim in Bnei Brak.
She was the daughter of the “Tzadik of Chaifa” Rabbi Tanchum and Feiga Dunin, and sister of the famed mashpiim R’ Avraham Dunin and R’ Reuven Dunin, Mrs. Sara Abrams of Miami and Rebbetzin Aduka Elyashiv.
Mrs. Markowitz was a pillar of faith and kindness, who devoted her life to the holy activities of the Rebbe and to helping others in need. She was involved in various charity and outreach projects, and supported her husband in his role as a respected Rabbi and teacher.
She took a lead role in education and publicizing the importance and merit of women and girls lighting Shabbos candles, as per the Neshek campaign of the Rebbe. She was a master kallah teacher and educator of couples at the Rabbanut in Tel Aviv.
She traveled throughout Israel, lecturing in schools, hospitals and army bases. “No one could ignore words of truth,” she said about her tireless efforts, even when immediate results were not always visible.
Once, during a Yechidus, the Rebbe asked her to deliver the album about the Neshek campaign to a specific group of Nshei Chabad who asked the Rebbe for advice how to get involved. It was clear the Rebbe saw her as an example to others.
She received much correspondence from the Rebbe who gave her much direction in her life.
She raised a generation of children who follow in her way of Torah and Chassidus.
She is survived by her children, Mrs. Chaya Rubinstein of Bnei Brak, Rabbi Nachum Markowitz of Crown Heights, Rabbi Dovid Markowitz of Netanya, Rabbi Yechezkel Markowitz of Tirat HaCarmel, and Mrs. Liora Rivkin of Kfar Chabad, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The Levaya took place on Friday afternoon, and departed from the funeral home Shamgar in Jerusalem, with burial on Har Hazeisim.
The family will sit shiva at Rabbi Garelik Street 26 in Kfar Chabad, until Thursday morning.
Baruch Dayan Ha’emes.
