Mrs. Miriam Bernstein, a woman of valor who lived through the horrors of the past century to build a family in freedom, has passed away on Friday, hours before Shabbos Parshas Bo, 5772.
She was 106.
Born in Poland, she lost her siblings and the rest of her family in World War I. While trying to survive through those horrors, she suffered bullet holes in her back which remained with her for the rest of her life.
When she managed to emigrate to the United States, she married Rabbi Yehuda Bernstein, who was a Rebbi in a cheder in Brownsville, NY, where many frum families lived at the time.
Living in freedom was not all that cheerful when her husband passed away at an early age. Mrs. Bernstein was left to raise their four children on her own.
She decided to send her son, Noach, to Yeshivas Tomchei Tmimim Lubavitch, and later communicated with the Rebbe for many years.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren – many of them serve as Shluchim.
Rabbi Noach Bernstein is sitting shiva together with his sister at 1470 E 22nd St between N and O. until Friday afternoon.
