Mrs. Mazal Flinkenstein, a longtime resident of Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, passed away on Monday, Yud Beis Nissan, after contracting COVID-19.
She was 85.
Mrs. Flinkenstein was a longtime resident of Brighton Beach and very active in Rabbi and Rebbetzin Sholom Mendel Simpson’s Oceanview Jewish Center.
Originally from Tunisia, she immigrated from Paris, France to the United States in 1969 together with her husband Gedalia, and enrolled both her sons in United Lubavitcher Yeshiva, Ocean Parkway, during the Rebbe’s “shnas hachinuch” campaign.
She was predeceased by her husband Gedalia and is survived by her sons Rabbi Dovid Flinkenstein – Shliach in Wilmette, Illinois, and Dr. Simcha Flinkenstein – Minneapolis, Minnesota, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mazal was a true matriarch! Her warm personality was evident to anyone that met her. Her smile, friendliness and willingness to help others was her trademark. She cherished friendship and family. May her sons get nechama knowing that she touched many lives and she will be remembered and sorely missed.

I remember Mazal from when I used to visit my grandparents in Brighton Beach. She had a beautiful, happy personality and was always ready to laugh. She made so many people happy, and I’ll always have wonderful memories of her.
Never had the pleasure of meeting this well loved woman, but am in awe of her obviously adopting a lifestyle that ensured her sons and grandchildren would be raised in a manner befitting Jews who are proud of their identity and committed to Torah and yiddishkeit. it doesn’t surprise me that both her children are in indispensable positions of service to the public, one as a shaliach and the other as a doctor. surely her merits have accompanied her to the olam ha’emes. may this kind woman be a maylitz yosher for all of us, especially in these particularly trying… Read more »
