Mrs. Gita Ceitlin, widow of a chossid and activist who was from the first families to build the Chabad community in Montreal, passed away on Shabbos morning, 21 Kislev 5772.
She was 88.
She was born to R’ Yechiel Yosef Rivkin and his wife Sheina (nee Azimov) and was raised through the many hardships that life in Russia posed for chassidic Jews, living in Kremenchuk, Klimovich, Homil, Yegurvsk (near Moscow), Tashkent, Levuv and Poland.
A resourceful businessman, R’ Yechiel Yosef raised her and her siblings Mrs. Freida Levin (today in Kfar Chabad), R’ Hirshel Rivkin OBM, R’ Zusha Rivkin (Kfar Chabad), Mrs. Risha Rochel Reichman OBM and R’ Chaim Rivkin OBM, with a strong love and care for Yiddishkeit.
While being arrested for suspicion on possessing gold, R’ Yechiel Yosef bravely resisted the Communists cutting off his beard. “Cut my head off first,” were his immortal words which scared them off.
The Rivkin family later immigrated to Israel, after escaping to Paris and living there for 2 years. It was there where Gita married R’ Yehuda Leib (Leibel) Ceitlin, one of the two sons of the known chossid and activist R’ Aaron Eliezer Ceitlin HY”D.
R’ Leibel and Gita arrived in Montreal, Canada, after the 9 Shluchim of the Frierdiker Rebbe worked to strengthen the Jewish community there and built Yeshivas Tomchei Tmimim – Rabbinical College of Canada.
But as the boys’ education was cared for, R’ Leibel wanted the same for his daughters, and opened a class which became the basis of Beth Rivkah Academy of Montreal, a large Chabad girls school.
Mrs. Ceitlin was supportive of her husband’s charitable activities and his iconic chassidic lifestyle which included hours long farbrengens every Shabbos with fellow chassidim the city was blessed with and members of the community. Bochurim always knew his home was an address for any of their needs.
She was particularly active in the immigrant community from the former Soviet Union, helping them settle and integrate and offering caring guidance and sound advice.
In addition, she was the propeller behind Free Hebrew For Juniors, a unique organization that offers Jewish educational classes and programs at public schools across the city of Montreal, run by her daughter and son in law.
She is survived by her children Chaya Sarah Marozov, Sima Paris, Rochel Lison, Rabbi Aaron Eliezer Ceitlin, Rabbi Yechiel Yosef Ceitlin – all of Montreal, and Freidi Kesselman – Oak Park, MI; many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The levaya will take place Sunday, leaving from Chesed Shel Emes at 12 noon.
The family will be sitting shiva at the Marozov residence at 4710 Carlton Avenue, Montreal. Shacharis at 8:15 and 9:15 and mincha 3:45 and 4pm. Maariv both minyanim at 4:45pm.

This is sad news about such a rightous and especially good natured person. Mrs. Ceitlin was a REAL person, a dugma chaya to all who knew her. Always a good word, such a warm and friendly , caring personality. Vehachai yiten el libo , her legacy goes on naturally through her exceptional children and offsprings , but let us – laymen learn from this special woman. True Ahavas Yisroel is what will bring Moshiach now!
She was like a bubby to many who had no bubby. a woman who suffered throughout her life yet always had a good word for everyone she met.
A beautiful, strong and wise woman who in her quiet way, made such an impact on so many. She was power and grace and a true eved Hashem. Hamakom yenachem eschem mitoch shaar availai Zion v’Yerushalayim.
May she be a gutte gebeter for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and all of klal yisrael.

Bs”D The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I know Chaya Soroh Morozov from New Haven and I knew her to be a diamond – her home and arms were always open to help anyone. She l’havdil l’chaim tovim must have learned that in her home from her Mother and Father, Zichronom Livrocho., Hashem will comfort the mourners amongst the mourners of Zion and Yerushalayim, and may we all be zoche to see our loved ones very, very soon with Techiyas HaMeisim, Now..

Mrs. Ceitlin was a very special woman…..she will be missed by her beautiful family and by the community……Hamokoim Yenacheim…Moshiach now!!
This past Wednesday I visited her in her hospital room. I can testify that she was gracious — in the full sense of the word — to the very end. She of course made sure I ate something, it was her hospital room so naturally she was hostess. It is very hard to see great spirits leave, even after a long and productive life. As she spoke with love and gratitude of my grandmother I felt blessed by her presence also — and how wonderful a person who was filled with gratitude, graciousness, hospitality and faithfulness in her last moments.… Read more »

She was one of the 3 Mashpiaos in Montreal (which the Rebbe asked for every city to have….)
She was the best grandmother anyone could have asked for. She will be terribly missed.
Read the paragraph carefully.. that’s not what was mentioned.
Baruch Dayan Haemes. May the whole family be comforted! She was a very special woman!
she was quite occupied in helping out so many, mainly russians, listening, talking encouraging and inspiring them(mekarev them) in her own quiet way.
Bubby! I’m gonna miss you dearly!!!!! U were very special to me!, But ur memory’s and always positive attutude are gonna stay with me forever!!!.
R’ Leibel ceitlin was not 1 of the 9 bochrim sent by the frierdiker that came to montreal 5702, the ceitlins came after the histalkus, in 5711. he defenently contributed lots to the chsidishe khila and to idishekeit in general in montreal. YEHI ZICHROM BARUCH
