Motl (Marik) Tovshteyn, a longtime Crown Heights resident who survived Communism to build a proud Jewish family, passed away Wednesday, 5 Adar, from complications of COVID19.
He was 81.
Motl emigrated to Crown Heights from Odessa, Ukraine, about 3 decades ago along with his wife, Lina and two sons, Chaim and Eli.
Motl was affiliated with the F.R.E.E.-based Russian community and prayed there. He was also well-known throughout the community during his years living in Crown Heights for his work for Klein’s Grocery, Raskin’s Fish and Brochshtat’s chair rentals.
Back in the USSR he was a respected mechanical engineer, but after moving to New York, he was willing to settle for a much simpler career only for the sake of his sons, who were inspired by his lifelong fierce stance for the Jewish identity and became Chabad baalei teshuva.
He is survived by his wife Lina, and two sons, Chaim and Eli, and 9 grandchildren.
The levaya will take place tomorrow, Thursday.
9:15 – Service near F.R.E.E (1383 President St)
9:30 – Passing by 770 Eastern Parkway

We remember dear rev motel . A hard worker , always pleasant and a sincere Emesdik person. Much to learn from this humble man who did his job with nobility and no complaints .
This is such sad news! He was a lovely man, & SO proud of his children & grandchildren! May his neshoma have the highest Aliyah, may Hashem comfort his family, & may his wife have a Refuah Shelaima MAMMOSH!
He was a really special person and he will truly be missed!
oy, so very sad, he was a gentle warm kind man
I remember when he worked at klein’s, he was always super helpful. May his neshama have an Aliyah.
Many years ago (Summer of 1995), R’ Mottel and TBLCH”T his wife – who should have a Refuah Shleyma, were cooks at the Yeshiva Kayitz in Tannersvill NY under Rabbi A Wagner. I remember them very well Such kind and gentle people, who would get so much pleasure from watching the Bachurim eat. The budget was very tight that summer, and they were able to pull off things Yesh-Miayin. They made a speacial cake out of all of the milk that went sour. I had no idea that he was a mechanical engineer in his “previous life” – he was… Read more »
