Aliza Azan, a 40 year old mother and her three young children perished after a fire tore through a home in Brooklyn early Monday morning.
The blaze broke out around 2:30 a.m. at a three-story, single family home on East 14th Street in Flatbush, Brooklyn.
Firefighters arrive on the scene within three minutes, but FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said the home was already engulfed in flames.
“It was early morning, everyone in the home was asleep,” Nigro said. “The fire gets started and it got a good start before a neighbor noticed and called us.”
Cell phone video from the scene showed flames engulfing the top of the three-story, single family home.
“The fire traveled very quickly,” Nigro said. “The fire went from the first floor front, up the stairs to the second, again up the stairs to the attic.”
Inside the home was a couple, their six children and a cousin, Nigro said. The 40-year-old woman and three of her children — an 11-year-old boy, a 7-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl — were all killed. Nigro said they were found on the second floor.
Sources identified the four dead as Aliza Azan and her children Moshe, Yitzchak and Hanriet.
Yosi Azan, his 16 year old daughter Shilat and his 15 year old son Daniel are all in critical condition at Staten Island Hospital.
The Azan children were students at Yeshiva Ateret Torah, the same school attended by the Sasson children who died in a winter fire nearly three years ago.
The fire is believed to have been started by an unattended menorah but fire marshals could not confirm the source of the blaze at this time, VIN News reported.
The fire commissioner said at least one of the teens jumped from the burning building. The others who survived were able to get out a side door.
“This is a terrible tragedy, not just for this community, but for our city. This time of year, when these things strike, it just tears your heart out for the family,” Nigro said. “Our city grieves with this family today.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Levaya will take place tonight, Monday at 7:00 PM at Beit Knesset Sheves Achim, Avenue T and East 7th Street in Flatbush, Brooklyn.

It is with grief and a broken heart that I express my condolences to this poor Mishpacha. Additionally, I learned a lesson from this and that lesson is to extinguish the Shamash before I leave the house. May we know of no more sorrow, and very soon merit the ultimate light of MOSHIACH who will light up the world and by this time next year, we will all celebrate the true and complete Hanukkah in the Bais Hamildash Ha-Shlishi BIMHAYRA BEYAMAYNU B’KOROV MAMISH!!

Yes, it matters very much where the fire started, as we must do our best to learn from this most horrific tragedy. The Torah teaches us-Venishmartem Meod Lenafshechosaychem. This is a mitzvah Deoiraisa. We have an obligation to learn all we can from this tragedy, in order to better protect ourselves. At this point in time, the fire authorities are pointing to the menorahs on the first floor, near the front of the house, as the culprit. Should this be the case, we must insure that before all family members go to bed, the menorah’s are put out. This is… Read more »

FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said at the scene that the couple lived inside the house with their six children. One cousin was spending the night with them, he added.
“It was early morning, everyone in the home was asleep,” Nigro said, according to WCBS. “The fire gets started and it got a good start before a neighbor noticed and called us.
“The fire traveled very quickly,” he said. “The fire went from the first floor front, up the stairs to the second, again up the stairs to the attic.”
“The fire is believed to have been started by an unattended menorah but fire marshals could not confirm the source of the blaze at this time.”

Where do you get this information from? Multiple news sources are reporting that fire marshals believe the fire started on the first floor, in the front. Are you one of the fire marshals???
Wasn’t from Chanukah menorah! The fire happened on the 2nd floor the family Lights in the 1St floor ! Was from a portable heater possibly or from a electrical problem!
“Fire marshals believe an oil-fed menorah may have sparked the deadly fire at 1946 East 14th Street in Sheepshead Bay, a high-ranking police source told The Post.”
