With the Israel-Iran ceasefire seemingly taking effect, a new debate is emerging: How seriously was Iran’s nuclear program damaged?
If you ask President Donald Trump and Steve Witkoff, the American bombings totally destroyed Iran’s nuclear sites. But according to CNN, an initial Pentagon assessment believes the U.S. only set the program back by months.
As for Israel? Jerusalem believes it set Iran back by two and a half to three years. Trump, however, made a fascinating remark this morning, claiming that Israeli agents went to Fordow after the U.S. bombed it, “and they said it was total obliteration.”
Ok, so who do we believe? And how, at least publicly, have they all come to such different assessments?
The most concerning assessment, of course, is that reported by CNN. But in its very report, CNN—perhaps unwittingly—revealed a weakness in the assessment. Citing a source, CNN said the months-long delay “is based on a battle damage assessment conducted by US Central Command in the aftermath of the US strikes.”
In other words, CNN only took into account the state of Iran’s nuclear facilities, but failed to consider the assassinations of numerous Iranian scientists—who are far from easily replaceable.
Don’t forget: It wasn’t just scientists who Israel eliminated. Indeed, I can now reveal the scale of Israel’s opening strike against Iran: Israel eliminated 29 Iranian officers with the rank of brigadier general and higher.
Ok, but back to damage to the nuclear facilities. While uncertainty abounds as to the true level of damage, Trump has already threatened to attack Iran again if it tries to rebuild its nuclear program.
And that, damage aside, may well be the most important factor. If you ask me, between the near (perhaps total) destruction of Iranian nuclear sites, the elimination of their scientists, and Trump’s threats—Tehran’s nuclear program may well be put on hold until at least January 20, 2029, when Donald Trump is set to leave the White House.
