Dear Esther,
I borrowed a maternity skirt from a friend to wear to a wedding. It got caught on something that tore a hole in the fabric. Needless to say, it is no longer wearable. I tried to buy a replacement but the skirt is from a couple of seasons ago and no longer in stock. What should I do? Sarah
Dear Sarah, Readers will note: This is precisely why borrowing is a risky business. Call your friend, explain what happened, apologize profusely and hand her an envelope with the funds to purchase a similar skirt. Do not ask, “Can I reimburse you for the skirt?” Don’t even say, “I insist on reimbursing you for the skirt.” Half the people in the world will respond, “No, it’s okay,” (even though it is not okay). Just hand over the envelope, no questions asked.
