It was the great Chasidic wedding of 1806: The bride was Sheina Schneuri, granddaughter of Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi – the Alter Rebbe; the groom, Eliezer Derbarmdiger, grandson of Rabbi Levi Yitzchok of Berdichev.
Since the two families lived far apart, the wedding was held at a half-way point, Zlobin, Poland.
Thousands of guests descended on the city for the event. The streets around the wedding hall were streaming with well wishers, while in the hall itself, one could hardly move. At one point, the two grandfathers wanted to discuss something privately, but they were unable to reach the door.
“Come,” Rabbi Levi Yitzchok told Rabbi Schneur Zalman, “let us go through the wall.”
Unfazed, Rabbi Schneur Zalman responded, “Not everything one is capable of should be done in public.”
