It was a typical Thursday evening in the house, identified by the usual dinner and bedtime routine with my two babies. Soon enough, the kids were asleep, and I finally had a moment to sit down with my husband and ask him about his day. These are my favorite moments- the few uninterrupted bits my husband and I can share. I treasure them, you know- they don’t happen all the time.
You see, my husband is not just my rock and hero, he is also a guardian angel for my entire community.
My husband is a Hatzalah first responder, and as his wife, I couldn’t be prouder.
Filling the role of a volunteer’s wife comes packaged with some unique factors. Let me go back to my story to explain.
As my husband and I enjoyed a quiet moment together, his pager suddenly went off. It’s a familiar feeling by now- the rush that washes over me when I hear the beep of his Hatzalah radio , and seeing his facial expression immediately change to “action-mode.” He jumped up from the couch and ran to grab his gear. “Emergency call,” he said simply, giving me a meaningful look before rushing out the door.
I found myself unable to sleep until my husband had safely returned- this experience all too familiar each time he receives a late-night call.
Being married to a Hatzalah volunteer has given me a unique perspective on the work that these men do every day. I have seen firsthand the sacrifices that have been made, I know stories of lives that have been changed, compelling me to feel constantly awe-inspired by their impact. It’s a job that requires an unwavering commitment to helping others, and one that fills many with a tremendous amount of gratitude.
That’s why I am proud to support the Hatzalah-thon campaign, a fundraising effort that is aimed at providing the resources necessary to ensure that our Hatzalah volunteers can continue their life-saving work.
