The second annual Kinus dedicated to mechanchim at Chabad Mesivtas took place at Yeshiva Mesivta Menachem in Westchester, NY, Tuesday and Wednesday 24th and 25th Tammuz.
For two days, almost 70 mechanchim came to listen, learn, present, confer, consider and make collective decisions about the wide array of issues the face young bochurim.
Due to the importance of the event, Mesivtos were kept on a skeletal staff to accommodate their mechanchim. In all, almost 50% of the staff and menahalim of 17 Chabad mesivtas in the US and Canada were in attendance.
The Kinus was organized by Igud Mesivtas V’Yeshivos Lubavitch directed by Rabbi Mendel Itzinger and a division of the Merkos Chinuch Office.
It follows a number of successful programs during its now second year, most notable among them is the V’Hogiso program which helped 300 talmidim succeed in a variety of topics.
The mechanchim heard presentations from experts in the field, Such as Morristown Mashpia Rabbi Leima Wilhelm, Rabbi Levke Kaplan.
They also networked, presented and critiqued each other’s ideas in sessions lead by Rabbi Aharon Oster, Rabbi Levi Shtern, and Rabbi Itzinger.
At the same time, menahalim met for many hours to discuss various universal concerns, exchange ideas and decided on a number of cooperative programs for the coming year.
“Tomchei Temimim is about who you are, not about what you know,” Rabbi Itzinger said during dinner. “Our aim is to condition our students so they are successful, because growth triggers pleasure, and pleasure triggers the desire to grow even more, thereby bringing our students even more pleasure. And when our students and happy and fulfilled they will live lives in which they will continue to grow and grow.”
His address was followed by Rabbi Aharon Dovid Gancz who regaled attendees with importance of their mission.
In a Fabrengen that lasted until the wee hours of the morning Rabbi Moshe Wohlberg, who came from Manchester especially for the Kinus, demanded from the Mechanchim to live the message they impart on their Talmidim. “Methods and programs help, but they cannot compare to a Maggid Shiur who is himself fully engulfed in Torah, and the Mashpia who truly cares for him Talmidim,” he said.
On Wednesday, Rabbi Dr. Hirshel Fried made a series of presentations on ensuring that Yeshiva is not only about intellectual learning, and how to ensure that that Yeshiva’s message is imparted for life and as a way of life.
Rabbi Yosef Eizicovics, Menahel of Mesivta Coral Springs in Florida, was most inspired by the “cleverly crafted Kinus. Two invigorating days of learning, gleaning, and growing, in a true spirit of ish es re’eihu yazoru.”
“This wasn’t about tips or basic training, we got to the heart and soul of Chassidishe Chinuch, bringing it out in ourselves so that we can take it to our Talmidim,” said another participant.
Best in the business!!!! Amazing mashgiach and mashpia at the same time. Such a rare combo that he executes sooooo well. Yasher Koach Rabbi!
…for the effort to improve the yeshiva experience for our boys.
I agree, that ‘im ain kemach, ain Torah’. Please make sure the boys have nutritious and tasteful food when they ae away from home in yeshiva under your care.
Thank you again.
Lubavitch mesivta of Chicago…..Hanhalal is amazingly caring. No place is perfect for every child, but all my boys have been well taken care of b’gashmiyus u b’ruchniyus in this special mosod. Rabbi Perlstein and Rabbi Halberstam….keep it up!
I was there, and I think you misunderstood.
The message was not against Methods etc, it was the in ADDITION to those the teacher should “walk the walk” and be an example.
Of course hanhala members have to be fully engrossed in Torah and should be caring towards the talmidim. But why are over 50 percent of our Bachurim finishing Mesivta without the basic ability of reading an amud gemara on their own? Or for that matter, being able to understand (on a basic level) a maamar chasidus? Do we really think that all that’s needed is the hanhala being more engrossed in torah, and thats going to solve the issue?? Why does everyone not working in the yeshivos see this reality, whereas those that are on the inside seem to have… Read more »
If the parents would only offer the full uper hand to hanholoh…Moshiach would have surely arrived years ago!!!. The issue is our moysdos are dependent on parents who the time has come evry parant accepts how: ?דברי הרב ודברי התלמיד דברי מי שומעין At least as much as anyone must blindly accept any company policy one ever deals with. Otherwise if you can’t back the yeshiva blindly and respect your Tzadike’l/son over experience staff. Why are parents so oxymoron to send there sons to this specific Moses in the 1st place? Why should any honholo member jeopardize his career? Will… Read more »
Wich mesivtas do you consider successful and would like others to learn from?
I was there.
I think you misunderstood the quote.
Rabbi wallberg was not speaking against “methods and programmes” he was saying that IN ADDITION to that a teacher has to LIVE what he preaches… a
Maybe, just maybe, hanhalos should reverse their harsh course, and use the proven and winning tactics of Shluchim; like: love, caring, warmth, non-judgmentalism, and the like. What a crazy and novel concept!
From the Beast of Coral Springs
Feed them properly so they’ll be able to concentrate better, so they’ll be happier and accept more readily.
Why do the hanhalahs think that bochurim don’t need to eat normal food? Don’t they pay enough tuition? I know when they are well fed they can perform better.
Feed them what you yourself would want to eat and don’t be stingy – enough for even those who come in last (someone has to be last).
Maybe they can learn how to answer in the acceptance process in a timely fashion, and not drag it out for 4 months
Are what is finally bringing success to our Elementary schools and will BE”H bring success to our Mesivtas and Zals. It is only a matter of time before the Heiligeh Hanhalos see the light. (Secret: some of them already are…)
Hope the hanahalah will now begin to receive some warmth from commenter #1 and feel that he truly cares. Maybe fewer hanahalah and bochurim will be turned off
This organization has great potential to help our bochrim
It should be supported generously
Hope the bochurim will now begin to receive some warmth from the hanahalah and feel they truly care. Maybe fewer bochurim will be turned off
