On Sunday, Rabbi Mendel Goldberg, Shliach in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, was disturbed to find that Chabad’s public Menorah had been vandalized.
The Menorah, located on 5th Avenue at the main boardwalk of Playa del Carmen, had been broken into pieces.
After much effort, Goldberg was able to find a welder who agreed to work on Sunday, despite the holiday, who fixed the Menorah just in time for the second candle to be lit, to the delight of the large crowd in attendance.
Chabad of Playa del Carmen, directed by Shluchim Mendel and Chaya Goldberg, has been organizing nightly Menorah lightings each Chanukah for the past 7 years.
Tourists from around the world take part in the public display of Jewish pride, with people from all over the US and Canada, Panama, Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, England, Netherlands, Norway, France, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Israel and Australia joining this year alone.
