Family and friends joined a memorial event marking the 30th Yartzeit of Ari Halberstam HYD Tuesday night in Crown Heights.
The event took place at the Jewish Children’s Museum, which was built in memory of Ari, who was murdered in a terror attack in 1994 when a gunman in a car opened fire on a van carrying more than a dozen Chabad students as it began to cross the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan.
Speakers who addressed the event shared memories of Ari and of his mother Devorah Halberstam’s determination to achieve justice for her son and all the efforts she has made keep Ari’s memory alive with positive action, such as in the building of the Jewish Children’s Museum which teaches tolerance and about the Jewish faith to people of all walks of life.
The MC for the event was Shea Halberstam, Ari’s brother. A Siyum was recited and explained by Ari’s uncle, Rabbi Shloime Carlebach.
Rabbi Shmuli Metzger, Shliach in Manhattan, related memories of Ari, who was his childhood friend. Rabbi Yaakov Reiter, Shliach in Long Island, who was a survivor of the terror attack on the Brooklyn Bridge during which Ari was murdered, told details of the attack and the aftermath. Rabbi Zalmy Heber, another childhood friend of Ari’s, shared personal recollections as well.
