Women In Unity, an organization of women from all sections of the Melbourne Jewish community; Chabad, Adass, Mizrachi and others, gathered on Rosh Chodesh Av for an evening of unity for our brothers and sisters in Israel.
A crowd of approximately three hundred women joined in Torah, Tehillim and Tzedakah. A significant amount of money was raised for charities in Israel.
These were led by Mrs. Anna Bankier of Mizrachi who spoke on the relationship of Jews and Eretz Yisrael and the kedusha of both, with the need to constantly progress in holiness.
Mrs. Chaya New of Chabad spoke on the greatness of Tzedakah in general, mentioning the obligation and privilege of those Divinely financially blessed as G-D’s trustees to be generous in this specific mitzvah.
Mrs. Etty Spigelman of Adass gave a passionate update on the situation in Israel having just returned from visiting her family there where she experienced the sirens and bomb shelters first hand. She spoke on the power of Tefillah, stating that prayer when sincere and directed achieves its goals. Hashem listens even if we do not always understand the response.
Tehillim was led by Mrs. Miriam Telsner of Chabad and Mrs. Riva Cohen, the organizer of the gathering, chaired the evening. and encouraged women to take on a practical application in these areas.
Neshek kits for women to distribute, Tzedakah boxes to take home and a discounted price for the Melbourne-Kosher Australia books were made available. Many women undertook to strengthen themselves in these mitzvos as well as to share and encourage others in them.
As in the days of Mitzrayim, may the women of this generation bring to fruition the immediate Geulah with the arrival of Moshiach and the descent of the Third Bais HaMikdash.
