Yeshiva College and Beth Rivkah Schools in Melbourne have been closed Wednesday after a teacher who recently returned from the United States was diagnosed with coronavirus, 7News reported.
The male teacher from Yeshivah-Beth Rivkah Colleges, aged in his 50s, is one of four new confirmed COVID-19 cases in Victoria, Australia which has brought the state’s total number to 22.
He became unwell on March 7, one day after arriving back in Melbourne from Los Angeles and worked at the school’s St Kilda East campus for half a day while infectious on Monday.
The orthodox Jewish school and its associated early learning centre, creche and Yeshivah Centre have been closed today as a precautionary measure.
“As a result, we have closed the school for 24 hours to assess the situation,” the colleges said in a statement.
Four families from the school community who happened to be on the same flight have also entered self-quarantine, principal Rabbi Shimon Waronker said.
This morning, the Federal Health Department confirmed more than 110 COVID-19 infections had been detected across Australia, but that number later rose, with new cases reported in Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania.
