NYC Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch came to Crown Heights on Monday to review the Sanitation Department’s performance over the recent High Holiday period and to look for ways to improve the service for next year, as well as to improve the cleanliness of the neighborhood year-round.
Joining the Commissioner at the meeting were Commissioner Fred Kreizman of the Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit, Chief Advisor to the Mayor Ingrid Lewis-Martin, Senior Advisor Yoel Eisdorfer, and DSNY Deputy Commissioner & Chief of Staff Ryan Merola.
The meeting was hosted by Chanina Sperlin, Crown Heights Jewish Community Council’s Executive VP for Governmental Affairs and included CHJCC Executive Director Eli Cohen, Yigal Niasoff, Sam Stern, Moshe Pinson, and Dovid Wolosow.
Commissioner Tisch began by apologizing for the shortcomings in Sanitation pick up over the High Holiday period. Because of administrative and budget issues, the extra resources that had been requested by the Jewish Community Council to accommodate the massive influx of visitors to the neighborhood were not provided this year.
Given the high profile of the neighborhood as a tourist attraction and the increased numbers of people and events at certain times of year, additional manpower and equipment should have been allocated, and the lessons will be learned for the future.
Commissioner Tisch emphasized, however, that the City can only do so much and the assistance of local residents is required. In particular, the Commissioner pointed out that on her arrival in Crown Heights she saw that many homes scheduled for Tuesday pickup had trash bags in the alleys on a Monday morning. All residents are reminded that trash in bags may not be put out for collection before 8pm on the evening before collection. In District 9, collection is Tues, Thurs and Sat, East of Brooklyn Avenue – the other days West of Brooklyn. Trash in cans may be placed in the alley at 6pm. Consideration is given on Friday evenings before Shabbos. However, the Sanitation will be using enforcement measures and, when necessary, writing summonses to ensure compliance.
Businesses are required to have private carters contracted to remove their trash.
Another issue where the Commissioner promised additional enforcement is with regard to commercial vehicles, trucks, and large unregistered vehicles, like mobile homes, trailers, and buses left overnight on the avenues that prevent cleaning and also present a safety hazard for people on the dark sidewalks late at night. Deputy Commissioner Merola heads a special interagency task force to tow away abandoned vehicles and they will be paying attention to Crown Heights in the near future.
Other issues that were addressed in the meeting were rat infestation, regular street sweeping, pickup from the schools, corner trash baskets on the avenues overflowing, and trash created by religious institutions. Thanks were given to Shmuel Stern acting on a volunteer basis to hire crews to sweep Kingston Avenue.
The Commissioner assured the meeting that she will be able to tackle all the issues raised at the meeting and community residents complimented her for her attentiveness to the community as well as for her many successful accomplishments during her tenure so far as Commissioner.

What about all the abandoned vehicles with no plates, and the abandoned vehicles with counterfeit ‘paper’ plates. Which never moves and street can’t be clean near Schenectady Ave, Utica Ave & Rochester Ave.
Those abandoned vehicles in the 2 blocks near Lincoln Terrace Park area need to be towed away.
It makes the street dirty, sanitation trucks can’t clean during ASP.
On Crown St near Schenectady, there is many abandoned automobile’s with expired Vermont State license plates.
This is part of a scam where they can leave the automobile’s which are Not registered, not insured. Abandoned on the city street without getting ticketed or towed.
It’s been like this for years.
311 app
Stolen cars can be used to commit crimes.
I had a car next to my house for a few weeks which hadn’t moved, and when I contacted 311, police came and somehow determined that it belonged to an auto shop nearby. I guess that mechanics leave them on the street out of lack of parking in their shop. Can something be done about that?!
Crown Street between Utica Avenue and Schenectady Avenue has about half a dozen derelict abandoned and unregistered vehicles parked in the same spot since 2020.
Locals on our block can never find any parking for our legal vehicles because of this.
It also causes trash pile ups and leaves beneath the vehicles, causing the street to be dirty.
Sadly I have seen people who live near Kingston bringing their house garbage to the cans on the corners of Kingston
the garbage that piles up on union street and kingston ave is a chilul hashem and an eyesore not to mention the rats that feed off the garbage that stays there for several days. ditto for president and kingston.
all this will accomplish is more sanitation tickets to our homeowners
instead of doing their job
Y but its not fair that some residents get tickets because other residents don’t do there part to keep the neighborhood clean.
Sounds like a lot more fines coming to crown heights residents. How about making life easier for ppl. -More parking, remove Citi bike racks from streets to large sidewalks. -ASP to max 2 times per week. – remove cars/ e-bikes with illegal or no plates -Prevent illegal dumping on Troy and maple -more lighting around CH. Area got very dark since led upgrades. I haven’t seen the community reps opposing all the new homeless shelters coming to south of Ch. If we won’t be represented properly we WILL form our own community council. Unlike central Ch anash here are very… Read more »

By the intersection of Empire Blvd and Nostrand Ave (North side of Empire Blvd).
There is an abandoned homeless encampment of garbage carts, with garbage inside of it. It is sitting there for a while and I’m sure that rats or mice are loving it.
It would be nice if Sanitation DSNY can remove it.
Keep our streets clean.
Sanitation must prioritize Enforcement
No trailers , no campers , allowed to be parked , they are parked for three years already
Between 781 Clarkson Ave and 681 Clarkson Ave.
There’s around 15 fully abandoned large trucks, taking away parking. Causing street not to get cleaned.
As well many other abandoned cars all over East Flatbush and Remsen Village near CH.
the sweepers dont come by amymore like they used to.
East New York between Kingston and Brooklyn filthy tons of broken cars cars without plates
What about all over CH, the many NYC City sidewalk trees that are dead, leaning and can fall by the next big rain storm. Is that under DSNY Sanitation as well or NYC Parks Department to remove before it falls, as many dead city trees in the past have fallen around CH…
Fenimore Street between Brooklyn & New York Aves has to many broken down abandoned cars, trucks & bus.
Maple Street between Brooklyn & Kingston Aves has a few abandoned vehicles as well.
This particular issue is also connected to another issue- the thousands of addicts and psychopaths who were placed into our community by NYC.
Since covid the streets aren’t cleaned like they used to. Sometimes its months that the streets are cleaned . Cars don’t move to the opposite side as in times past.
Look at some of the issues CH residents are pointing out. Too bad there isn’t more communication between CHJCC and the residents just on such an issue like this which has needed attention for the last few years. AND SINCE WE ARE TALKING ABOUT COMMUNITY AFFAIRS WHY IS THE HOMELESS PROJECT ON WINTHROP / CLARKSON AND ALBANY NOT BEING STOPPED? BIGGER ISSUE THAN ALL OF THESE THINGS.
Street cleaners can’t sweep since cars do not observe alternative side of the street parking rules. This has been going on for years
The street cleaners can’t clean. Alternative side of the street parking is not observed. It’s been going on for years. No one listens to the rules. The street cleaners sweep the middle of the street
Sanitation pickup throws the trash carelessly and ends up leaving a filthy mess on the sidewalk and the streets.
Street cleaners are a thing of long past
Dsny has come up with more restrictions with less work for them. Start putting water in sweeper again. Your spreading dust. Start back carrying a shovel and broom on the truck so you can sweep the corner sewer grates as you pick up garbage. 50% of our floods come from covered sewer grates. Bring back tag and tow operations. Dont just tag the vehicle for pickup and wait untill the person comes out and wipes it off. A repeated procedure that must stop. Dsny and parks dept need to have a meeting on how to tackle the leaves from the… Read more »
Manhattan has recycling bins on almost every corner, but they are nowhere to be found in Brooklyn! A city with this many people should have recycling pick up at LEAST twice a week, with bins on the corners as well. This is a major reason why people don’t recycle. I hope they addressed this issue at the meeting.
So I am supposed to believe that the garbage problems will be solved by having to wait until 8PM to put out the garbage — what about the fact that pickups don’t always happen in the morning any more??? Some days, the truck comes by for pickup the night of the pickup day. So if they can come any time on pickup day, how exactly is waiting to 8pm really helping that much from putting out at 6pm???
More and more they’re not even coming on pickup day. On my block one of the pickup days is Tuesday; well, it’s now Wednesday afternoon and they still haven’t shown up.
That will accept cars w out plates etc..get a tow truck with a shucher and let him start towing from 3 to 7 am Saturdays see what happens
