New York City Mayor elect Zohran Mamdani paid a visit to the Rebbe’s Ohel in the Old Montefiore Cemetery in Queens, New York, on Monday.
Mamdani, who was recently welcomed by Satmar Chassidim, was seen wearing a black velvet yarmulka as he stood in the Ohel, the most visited holy Jewish site in North America.
Mamdani is known for his pro-Palestinian activities and anti Israel rhetoric. Since being elected, he has been meeting key Jewish leaders, promising them that he will stand by the Jewish community.
His visit was first reported by Jacob Kornbluh of the Forward website. Seen alongside Mamdani was Crown Heights community activist Yaacov Behrman.
“Mamdani visited the Ohel of the Lubavitcher Rebbe in Queens this evening to pay his respects to the victims of the Bondi Beach terror attack,” Kornbluh reported. “Mamdani also made a private prayer at the grave.”
The terror attack in Bondi Beach hit the Chanukah celebration organized by the Chabad Shluchim in Sydney, Australia on Sunday. 16 people were murdered, including Chabad Rabbis Eli Schlanger and Yaakov Levitan.
Following the attack, Mamdani wrote the following statement:
“The attack at a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney today was a vile act of antisemitic terror. I mourn those who were murdered and will be keeping their families, the Jewish community, and the Chabad movement in my prayers. May the memories of all those killed be a blessing.
“While we are still waiting for all the facts to emerge, what we already know is devastating. At least 11 dead, including Rabbi Eli Schlanger, who held deep ties to Crown Heights. At least 29 injured. Another Jewish community plunged into mourning and loss, a holiday of light so painfully reduced to a day of darkness. This attack is merely the latest, most horrifying iteration in a growing pattern of violence targeted at Jewish people across the world. Too many no longer feel safe to be themselves, to express their faith publicly, to worship in their synagogues without armed security stationed outside. What happened at Bondi is what many Jewish people fear will happen in their communities too.
“On Bondi Beach today, as men with long guns targeted innocents, another man ran towards the gunfire and disarmed a shooter. Tonight, as Jewish New Yorkers light menorahs and usher in a first night of Hanukkah clouded by grief, let us look to his example and confront hatred with the urgency and action it demands. When I am Mayor, I will work every day to keep Jewish New Yorkers safe—on our streets, our subways, at shul, in every moment of every day. Let this be a purpose shared by every New Yorker, and let us banish this horrific violence to the past.”

This is definitely the way forward!!
The more we bring him close, the closer he will feel to us!
The satmar don’t like Israel, or Jews that are not religious ( “wearing the costume”)
Just as much as him.
Satmar openly doesn’t recognize Israel.
If you understand Yiddish, they talk hatred about the state of Israel.
On the other hand Lubavitch/ Chabad is very friendly and close to Jewish people that are not religious. And The Israeli government.
He needs to openly recognize the state of Israel.
His rhetoric created a world that allowed this to happen. Why are we letting him desecrated such a holy place with his presence?
Zohran is one of the biggest friend and supporter of the Jewish community, his words are constantly being taken out of context
“my love to the holy land five” is out of context? because he wrote the lyrics. Or is his support of BDS out of context? Is calling Israel apartheid out of context? He meant to say a party? His refusal to reject “globalize the intifada” as he is responsible for the safety of jewish institutions? we aren’t safe. and we should be very very careful and vigilant.
Finally someone that’s not living in a world of lies and misconception.
#JewsForZohran
? dont overly exaggerate?
Being politically available for alternative personal choices isnt being a friend.
The fact that he decided to come to the Ohel is a nice gesture on his part.
But a friend? Biggest???
Lets not get overly excited too fast.
We must take notice and appreciate this, but not at all much more then it.
Happy Chanukah
Nonsense!
I accidentally downvoted this – I wholeheartedly agree with you
how does he justify his globalize intifada statement?
His statement?!?
I appreciate he’s been criticized for being on a platform with people who say that, and he’s been criticized for not condemning it out Right.
That does not make it HIS statement.
It is speech like he has spoken that helps fuel the hatred of Yidden and Eretz Yisroel, and the horrific actions that come from it.
Moshiach NOW!
Who would invite him there and why?
Maybe just maybe he wants to show solidarity with Jewish people? And he knows the power and righteousness of the Rebbe?
Most Muslims respect those that genuinely believe in Hashem and practice their religion.
Because we see him act one way for the cameras and become another person when he is in muslim crowds. We see him wearing the keffiyeh and standing with those who support intifada, hamas, etc. His wife being a vile antisemite who constinously posts these views? All of it is why we be nice – and dont invite him into our spaces. He doesn’t believe in the power of the Rebbe. He doesnt respect Jews. He wants something out of it. And we need to not give it to him. We need to be civil and hold him accountable. And… Read more »
If he has come to the Ohel a person can do Teshuva in a minute. The light of the Rebbe and Ohel should be a beacon of light to show him the future in a different way. It took a lot for him to come.
I see this as a good thing. People are waking up.
I am impressed. He has been very outspoken against antisemitism and is now even visiting the ohel of the Rebbe. This goes to show the power of Teshuva. Maybe he is repenting from his anti-semitic ways and we will have a friend in gracie mansion for the next 4 years!
The kind of indoctrination (Oh, I’m just anti zionist— actually anti Jewish and anti western civilization) he has been through and has worked so much to promote amongst others is so thorough starting from so young. He is very charismatic and crafty. However, G-d can make bad people do good things if they think it’s in their self interest/will help them with their goals. His goal is still jihad and the destruction of America and the west. Our goal, infinite havdalot, is still Moshiach and the Geulah. Let’s do our par with G-d’s blessing and the blessing of His Tzaddikim.
still, all he could call it in his formal press statement; “men with long guns targeted innocent”
Thank you for visiting the ohel
Trust but verify
We are wary of what we were told about him but this is a considerably step of goodwill on his part.
It is appreciated
Everyone will end up going in one way or the other to the tzaddikim, the Rebbe Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok and the Rebbe Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson who have much, much broader shoulders than any of us (an understatement). Even an arch enemy of Jews and humanity by hoshgoach pratis is led to acknowledge Nossi Doreinu, and it’s fine that it’s for political reasons. The prophecy unfolds within nature.
what will the anti-police mayor do if we are attacked here in NY? send social workers to talk the terrorists down???

It’s by divine choice that this visit took place . One step closer to geula.
The Rebbeim knows what to do.
The Rebbe received David Dinkins too.
Thinking was no saint, but he did not coddle and did not say it was OK to say globalized The intifada and did not side with Hamas
Lev melachim beyad Hashem.
The hearts and mind of leaders is in the hands of G-d.
This Satmar guy told me about a certain anti semitic politician up in Monroe who ended up becoming very close and good friends of their community. Once elected they are puppets in the hand of Heaven. I once was in this Arab taxi and he told me the people in Tel Aviv who are non religious he is against but the people in meah shearim he respects. When a Jew truly lives by Torah the world will respect them and look up to them.
It’s a step in the right direction. I remain both skeptical and optimistic. Jews keep your eyes and ears open. Stay off your phones outdoors and keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Do not fall all over yourself for any gesture of friendship and sympathy. Demand a lot from the new mayor and always remain wary but respectful. Am Israel chai happy Chanuka and new year.
President Trump is friendly with everyone, even the enemies, shows a respectful face generally. He befriends people and can do amazing things.
The fact that he comes to the Ohel cannot be negative. (Dosnt take away from the fact that he is a moslem brotherhood.)
כבדהו וחשדהו. We must try to see good and hope in everyone. But at the same time we must be vigillant of what he says and does
They like to say something like:
“Judaism yes, Zionism no.”
Correct me if I’m wrong, but in
our history, while Jews living
in Muslim countries did not
have it so rosy, wasn’t it harsher
and bloodier in Europe?
Many years ago, Yackov Spivak, A”H,
on his radio show, hosted a couple
of Muslim leaders. A caller said, ” I’d
rather be a dhimi, but let me live and
be a Jew.”
Now that his becoming the mayor
is no longer in question, let’s
be naive enough to think that
he really means what he is saying
now.
And though the other side of Zohran Mandami’s mouth, his former Columbia professor father is busy
1) creating sympathy for anti-Israel activists who are “terrorized”,
2) defending pro-Hamas students at Columbia
3) arguing against protections for Jewish students.

Last week he was at Satmar 21 Kislev gatherings, but didn’t go to Yud Tes Kislev farbrengens. Now he did teshuvah, he went to the Rebbe MH”M.
We want to believe you
Support jews before they are murdered not after
The world is watching
Now I get it, when he said globalize the intifada he must have meant the fight against the yetzer hora and the struggle for personal growth and bitul.
We can all rest easy, be happy dont worry.
