Rabbi Nachman Twerski’s annual Lag BaOmer bonfire at his building on Lefferts Avenue is well known in the Crown Heights neighborhood.
Every Lag BaOmer, many Crown Heights residents, his neighbors and friends, gather around the festive bonfire to celebrate the special day.
This year, with residents in isolation, his neighbors joined to make sure the annual celebration still took place.
Chaim Jerufi, a fellow resident, organized the bonfire, with residents joining from their porches to keep social distance.
As is done each year, Rabbi Twerski was honored with the lighting of the bonfire – with the aid of a large wooden torch – all the way from his porch.
“We wanted to honor Rabbi Twerski, so we found a creative way to do it,” Jerufi told COLlive. “It was a truly special event.”
Rabbi Twerski also delivered a Dvar Torah from his porch as well.
The evening ended with joyous music and dancing.
