A 20-year-old Singaporean named Amirull bin Ali was arrested for planning to carry out a violent attack on Jewish members of the Chabad Shul at Waterloo Street in Singapore, Mothership reported.
Amirull, a former full-time National Serviceman (NSF) in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), had also planned to travel to Gaza in Palestine to join the military wing of Hamas and fight against Israel.
Authorities said he had wanted to carry out a knife attack against Jews, and even created his own replica of an AK-47 assault rifle and practiced with it, as he believed he would be issued one.
In July 2019, after watching a documentary on the Singapore Jewish community, he became “enraged” that Jews were living peacefully and thriving in Singapore while Palestinians were suffering overseas, authorities said. He decided to attack Jews at the synagogue.
Amirull planned to execute his attack at the Maghain Aboth Synagogue on a Shabbos, after prayers, and planned to kill 3 Jewish men.
He intended to conceal his face with a white keffiyeh scarf when carrying out the attack, and would flee the scene to post a short manifesto online afterwards.
Amirull even made two reconnaissance trips to the synagogue to scout the area and identify a spot along the exterior wall of the synagogue’s compound from where he could ambush his victims as they exited.
On Wednesday Shliach and Chief Rabbi of Singapore Mordechai Abergel told COL, “It was through G-d’s kindness that he was caught in time. He acted alone, and planned to carry out his attack on Jews outside of the Shul, due to the strict security measures we have in place inside the Shul.”
