Chabad of Talbiyah/Mamilla’s Jerusalem’s annual “Light Up Mamilla” celebration, a seven-night Chanukah event that annually radiates with Jewish pride and unity, faced an unexpected challenge this year. Due to security concerns, Mamilla Avenue, usually bustling with people, took on an eerie silence after a mandated early security closure.
Mamilla Mall’s CEO, not known for religious affiliations, took the initiative for the first time in 12 years. Concerned about the spirit of the city during this difficult time of war, he reached out, urging the organizers to proceed with the festivities. “We need your religious boys dancing down the Avenue. We need this more than ever,” he pleaded.
Undeterred by the financial burden and uncertainties, the Shluchim committed to taking it night by night. What transpired over the next seven nights was a kaleidoscope of incredible moments, hosted by families affected by hostage situations, terror victims from the October 7th massacre, and families of fallen soldiers – a poignant focus on those deeply impacted by the ongoing war.
The festivities began with a modest gathering of 300 people on the first night, hesitantly stepping out amid the prevailing tension. However, the crowd swelled to 1000 people each subsequent night, forming a river of joy dancing down the avenue. It wasn’t mere frivolity; it was an atmosphere infused with prayer.
Locals, tourists, and supporters of all backgrounds came together, expressing disbelief at the palpable joy. The illuminated surroundings encouraged restaurants and stores to stay open, creating a vibrant buzz throughout. This year’s light held a unique significance, embodying the notion that in times of darkness, one must make an effort to let the light shine until it dispels the shadows.
The nightly celebrations featured esteemed musical guests, including Solomon Brothers, Chaim Zippel, Duvi Shapiro, Avi Piamenta, Nemouel, and Mendi Jerufi, who recognized the need to lift the spirits of the crowd to new heights. Their performances succeeded in achieving just that.
This extraordinary Chanukah celebration became a symbol of hope and strength, a reminder that even in the face of adversity, the light of Jewish pride can never be extinguished.

Beautiful, so nice to see some dancing in yerushalayim.
