On a cool autumn day in 1978, seven young men ended years of rejection, institutionalization, and uncertainty by rejoining their community of birth. A home for men with developmental disabilities had been built, and these seven “pioneers” were its first residents. This was the beginning of Makor Disability Services/ Women’s League Community Residences.
Today, with more than 32 residential settings, Medicaid Service Coordination, Community Habilitation, CBR Supported Employment and Jumpstart Early Intervention programs, Makor touches the lives of countless children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.
But Makor, like many vital nonprofits, has experienced critical funding losses during the pandemic. On January 3rd, the organization will launch a 36-hour matching campaign to raise $1,000,000. This will ensure that every family can continue to receive unparalleled support with Makor. The Makor Giving Day will include a livestream hosted by Nachum Segal.
“In the short time that we’ve been with Makor, we’ve been very impressed with what we’ve seen. The teamwork and concern is outstanding, and everything is handled in a professional and caring way. We are confident that our daughter is in good hands,” say Nissan and Kayla Rosenthal, parents of one of Makor’s residents.
Ten-year-old Nechama Leah Davis sent this note with a modest donation to Makor: “It’s hard to believe that Makor is an agency. There’s such a homey environment and the staff are so caring. The kids are so happy and Makor is the agency that makes all these kids happy.”
