Rabbi Ezra Schochet, Rosh Yeshivas Ohr Elchanan Chabad in Los Angeles, California, is spending Pesach in the Holy Land of Israel and used the days of Chol Hamoed to meet with the leading rabbonim of Bnei Brak.
Rabbi Schochet, one of the greatest talmidei chachamim in Lubavitch today, met with the heads of the Ponevezh Yeshiva which is considered one of the leading Litvish yeshivas in Israel.
Meeting with the Gaon Rabbi Gershon Edelstein, who is also the spiritual leader of the Degel HaTorah party in Israel, Rabbi Schochet discussed the Rambam’s opinion about drinking 4 cups of wine during the Seder and the Alter Rebbe’s assertion.
Rabbi Berel Povarsky, a rosh yeshiva of the Ponevezh as well, shared with Rabbi Schochet the 2 times he merited to be received for a Yechidus with the Rebbe and the discussion about Torah and Chassidus. He recalled asking a bracha for his mother-in-law.
Rabbi Povarsky also recalled the days when his father Rabbi Dovid Povarsky OBM was the Rosh Yeshiva of Chabad in Tel Aviv some 70 years ago. One of his father’s most notable students was Hagaon Rabbi Yoel Kahn OBM who served as the head choizer of the Rebbe.
Rabbi Schochet also met with Rabbi Dov Lando and Rabbi Moshe Hillel Hirsch, the Rosh Yeshivas of the Slabodka yeshiva of Bnei Brak. He spoke with both of them in separate meetings about halacha and they inquired about his renowned Yeshiva.
Rabbi Schochet concluded the visit by meeting with Bnei Brak’s Chief Rabbi Aizik Landa, who as a youngster was brought to be tested by Rabbi Schochet as part of a Yeshiva Erev in Bnei Brak.
The two, along with Rabbi Yaakov Yaakov Yosef Kuperman of the Chabad Yeshiva in Kiryat Gat, spent time discussing the laws of Sefiras Haomer.
