My husband Mendy, and I moved out on Shlichus 4 years ago. I was 20 years old and 8 months pregnant with our first child.
It has been a whirlwind since then. We have had many successful events, yet 1 story stands out in my mind when I think about these past few years.
I was walking with my then 3 year old and 1 year old girls down the street. My oldest, ever the outgoing little girl, and the best shlucha that I know, sees a girl about her age and runs to her.
“Mommy, this is my friend!”
So I walk to her and start talking to the girls mother. We speak for a few minutes and the mother, Rachel* (name change for privacy) says “You know, I am Jewish. My husband isn’t, but I am.” We spoke for a while, exchanged numbers, and quickly became friends.
From then on she came to our house, experienced her first Shabbos, learned about Kosher food, what it meant to be a jew, and lit Shabbos candles for the first time with her 2 daughters.
The weekend after we met she sent me a whatsapp. She wrote “There is just such a special connection that I feel that I have never felt before. I don’t know what it is, but I feel so connected now.” Her neshama had found a home.
She has moved back to the States with her husband and children and called me to let me know that she now sends her girls to a Jewish school.
It is amazing how we see the Rebbe’s brocha every day. When the last person comes and makes a minyan, when someone orders challah for Shabbos, women lighting Shabbos candles, and children and their parents learn about Yiddishkeit and see the beauty in it. Every accomplishment is big no matter how small it may seem.
